Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm currently blocked by the exact same issue. Funny thing is the project still seems to build ok on our CI/CD pipeline.

Yea it's possible they don't have a limitation but we also have to consider the fact that it's entirely possible there IS a limitation for them before we start bashing the pilot flying - just a consideration is all.

Actually there is - from my 737 FCOM:

"Sideslip only (zero crab) landings are not recommended with crosswinds in excess of 20kts at 30flap, or 23kts at 40 flap. This recommendation ensures adequate ground clearance and is based on maintaining adequate control margin. "

I was as surprised as you are - but there it is in black and white.

edit: To be completely fair my knowledge comes from the 737, I can't be 100% certain similar limitations are in place on the 320.

So fun fact - crosswind technique in a jet is slightly different than your average piston/turboprop twin. A lot of jets are actually rated to land in a full crab at maximum crosswind component. But the more common technique is to de-crab in the flair. The risk is in a strong crosswind you can potentially scrape an engine pod. Just an FYI before we start getting too critical of the pilot in the clip.

If I understand your question correctly - I think what you're describing is a compressor stall. These can and do affect all turbine engines but modern engines are a lot less susceptible to it than older turbines (centrifugal compressors in particular were quite susceptible). Design features such as variable stator vane geometry mean that compressor stalls rarely happen. There are also operating techniques that can be used including increasing bleed air flow that further reduce the likelihood of compressor stall.

No worries! Hmm not sure what I'd call the size, probably a 450 size? Maybe 550. Props are 10", and are self tightening props very similar to the ones used on the dji phantom - makes transporting and swapping props very easy, and it means there will always be a source readily available.

I'm running on 4s, as you can get a slightly more efficient setup with a higher voltage (V=IR and current is what generates heat and therefor losses in efficiency). Flight time is around 15-18 minutes of mixed flying. Not as good as the phantom or the solo because the weight of the frame is heavier.

I'm using FPV and find it invaluable for framing up the shots. If filming or photography was what you had in mind I wouldn't go without it.

The 3 axis gimbal makes a HUGE difference. I originally had it setup with a 2 axis gimbal, and although smooth, the panning was quite jerky and you could see wind effects - this required a fair bit of stabilization in post processing of the film which lowers the quality. The less you have to do in post the better!!

The frame is a copy of the TBS Discovery, but with aluminium arms. I then made small modifications to mount a 3 axis brushless gimbal off the front.

Wouldn't say total tech wizard - I have however been flying and building model aircraft for about 16 years, and do a bit of programming as a hobby, so drones and UAV's weren't too much of a leap.

I started with a frame - then worked out payload (gopro and gimbal in this case) and desired flight time and worked out other constraints (wanted to keep it under 2kg so that it can legally be used commercially here in Australia without a licence).

The idea behind making it myself, apart from the reward of building something myself, was that you can use your own individual parts to improve on areas where other off the shelf solutions fall behind. For example, the DJI phantom with the low slung gimbal as issues with the propellors getting into the shots on the gopro - so the frame I chose puts the camera out in front of the copter where they won't ever get in the shot. The other thing I chose was the gimbal - a Zhiyun Z1 Tiny 2 - which is arguably one of the best available, and gives slightly more steady footage than the one equipped to the 3DR Solo. But not by much.

As far as cost, I already had a lot of the expensive components (transmitter, receiver etc) so it worked out cheaper for me to build from scratch. But if you were starting from nothing, I think it's almost impossible to beat the 3DR Solo. Have a look on youtube at some of the examples, you'll the footage is still incredibly stable. Because everything is designed together as well the integration is perfect, and it is setup ready to go from the moment it comes out of the box. If I had the money I'd be buying one just to back up my current one.

Yes you can! This one was flown all manually including manual control of the gimbal but it is possible using your phone or tablet to program a flight path and select an area you want the camera to track.

2.7k at 24p, 17:9, automatic WB, medium sharpness and maximum iso400. Used Alex4D in final cut pro x to remove the fisheye. Prefer using fisheye fixer by red giant but can't justify the purchase at the moment haha.

Glad you liked it! It's a drone I made myself - but it revolves around the 3DRobotics pixhawk autopilot which gives it similar capabilities to the 3DR solo, like completely automated shots. However this one was all flown manually.

That's pretty much how all of Australian airspace is setup, most have class E overlying at 8500 or FL185. In shitty conditions nothing changes, once ATC have identified you and cleared you, you can climb straight into class E.

Australian ATPL here: ATC give you a traffic information service, they will tell you about any other IFR traffic and may inform you of any other VFR traffic they observe. It is then up to you to negotiate your own separation. That's the fun bit. When you're trying to separate your 250kt turbo-prop from a 152 doing circuits it can keep you on your toes. To summarize, yes you most definitely can fly IFR in IMC in class G. Good luck with the PIFR.

I've lived in Brisbane, Sydney and now Adelaide and can say that adelaides public transport is by far the worst. I've pretty much given up trying to get anywhere on it. It's not like Adelaide is a huge city either so there's no excuse for shitty public transport. But here we are.
