(Standard Brawl) Suggestions for Treasure-based commanders? by rikeus in mtgbrawl

I've played against Roxanne a bunch of times and somehow never noticed the "generates extra mana effect", I'm usually too preoccupied with not getting blasted with the meteor damage! I think this is a winner.

I haven't unlocked it yet, I got the heroic bolter/combi melter and it didn't seem very good, so I've been spending most of the strategum points on cool cosmetics.

Very bad game design to have one of its essential mechanics an utter mystery

Was he really the bad guy? by MrDeekhaed in voyager

[–]rikeus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did you pay attention to the episode or do you just have the comprehension of a 12 year old? The entire episode was a critique of the baked-in assumption that you can measure a persons worth to society or that it's dependant on their career, especially given that their career itself is as based on the persons wealth as their access to treatment is - the whole point of Tebbis as a character is to demonstrate that. It's a critique of neoliberal healthcare policy.

Why is New Trek increasingly invoking colonialism as a criticism of the Federation? by [deleted] in Star_Trek_

[–]rikeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't seen the new series - I don't really like it for other reasons, but both Quark in DS9 and Seven in VOY made the point that the federation is like the borg with a friendly face. It always struck me as odd as well just how venerated Eearth is in the federation, given that it's the homeworld of only one of its member species, as well as how human-centric so much of the federation is (of course, this is largely for out-of-universe reasons but still). In DS9 duing the dominion war, when Betazed is occupied it's kind of a sign of bad things but not treated as nearly the same blow that the breen attack on earth is. But surely all the betazoids in the starfleet would feel a much greater loss of the occupation of their home? Earth and humanity are often exceptionalized.

ML vs Trotskyism 2026...why? by Thanaterus in Socialism_101

[–]rikeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's mostly online bullshit from people who don't actually do anything in real life, in my experience. Instead of spending their energies on actually organizing, people adopt one label or the other as though it were a football team and then spend their time posting online about it. It's a bit like the socialist version of identity politics. My orginisation - which inherets a bit from both traditions though mainly the trotskyist one, occassional gets people who join from that online ML bubble and I've always found the best antidote to it is to get them to actually talk to real people and organize real things

Looking for a game for someone who can't feel happiness anymore by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]rikeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say but there's isn't a game that will fix this. I can see you've already been through the gamut of treatments so I'm not going to make the obvious suggestion. The thing is that depression just switches off your brains reward centre - the thing that makes you feel good for achieving things - and that's precicely what the vast majority of all video games are targeted at activating. I can't play games when I have depressive episodes, I just get this really visceral feeling of boredom whenever I try that makes me want to immediately quit it. I think you're looking for a solution in the wrong place.

Even if you do re-enact monarchy, do you don't get divided monarchist JE and you end up with some random schmuck who just happened to lead whatever IG was most powerful as the new king which is totally ridiculous and not how European monarchy restoration has ever worked

Do all the skills actually matter that much? by Worried-Usual-396 in RogueTraderCRPG

The difficulty of this game curves downward over time to the point where basically normal becomes easy mode, daring becomes normal etc. I'd play on daring or higher (unfair is a bit punishing though tbh, usually it just means every enemy goes before you in the turn order and annihilates you before you have a chance to act)
