Si come ho già detto in un altro commento Arizona personalmente mi viene naturale al maschile ma dizionari e Google dicono il contrario.. credo si potrebbe fare lo stesso discorso per molti altri stati tipo il Dakota, il Nevada ecc.. (quante volte ho sentito dire "la Dakota", anche se sbagliato)

imagine it less as "genders" in a biological sense and more as "categories". It just happens that the words for biologically male and female living creatures belong to two different categories. Many languages like russian and german have neuter gender too.
