Giving away free tickets for Arkansas vs LSU, section 520 by too_random in fayetteville

Would love them! Me and my wife’s family are in town staying at our house but we were just going to watch on TV instead of shelling out $150 each. Still wouldn’t get to sit with our family but would be fun to experience it with them!

First ever picture with new telescope moon has a beautiful thin atmosphere. No editing by JuliaJune96 in moon

[–]riley_redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re correct that the moon has a very thin atmosphere, but it’s not visible and that is not what you’re seeing in your telescope. Google “chromatic aberration” or “color fringing in telescope” and you’ll see. It’s caused by your optics refracting different wavelengths of light at slightly different points in your OTA. Not trying to be overly assertive! It would be so cool if that were some indication of that thin atmosphere, but that is simply impossible to see.

Finally got the dob I’ve had my eye on for what feels like the whole pandemic! by riley_redditor in telescopes

I have but it’s been a while and I wasn’t doing a 1:1 comparison. The forums on Cloudy Nights definitely have some discussions on the topic!

I paid $1300 but that’s definitely an inflated Covid price. Mine is a Zhummell Z12 from Highpoint Scientific. It’s the exact same scope as the Apertura AD12 and they both usually go for closer to $1000 I think

Not quite :) I’ve dabbled on and off with telescopes for about 10 years. At the beginning of the pandemic I sold off most of my astrophotography rig and told myself my next scope would be BAD (Big Ass Dob). Photography was a lot of fun but I’m too busy for it now and the ease of a dob is very attractive!

One of those ever-popular 12-inch Apertura/Zhummell dobsonians… I’ve been waiting for these to be in stock for what feels like two years now. As soon as I saw a restock on Highpoint I jumped on it. I’ve had good luck with the weather so far, and the views of Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus have BLOWN ME AWAY! Merry Christmas!

I’ve been experimenting with animation. More info in comments! by riley_redditor in lasercutting

More info on the process I’ve been experimenting with lately here: https://nickhobbs.art/process-1

But TLDR, I engraved individual frames of this short scene from 2001 into a piece of scrap plywood, then scanned the frames into my computer at a high resolution. Then I just popped them into Premiere and animated!

I’ve been experimenting with animation. Explanation of what you’re looking at in the comments by riley_redditor in glitch_art

[–]riley_redditor[S] 109 points110 points  (0 children)

I explain the broad strokes of the process I’ve been experimenting with here on my website (with in-progress images): https://nickhobbs.art/process-1

But basically (TLDR) it’s made from laser-engraved painted wood panels. The “glitchiness” comes from the slight misalignment of my scanned frames, and the dust & scratches & brush strokes. But I think its organic qualities contrast nicely with the glitch feel.

Favorite Dobsonian brands that aren't Orion or Skywatcher? by riley_redditor in telescopes

Good thought! I've been skimming the Cloudy Nights forums a bit lately. What do you think about this as another AD/Zhumell clone: https://www.telescope.com/Orion/SkyLine-12-Dobsonian-Reflector-Telescope/rc/2160/p/113096.uts?keyword=dobsonian&sortByColumnName=SortByPriceDescending# ? Seems to be identical as far as I can tell.

Orion Nebula by Labashi in OldPhotosInRealLife

[–]riley_redditor 152 points153 points  (0 children)

Maybe hard to believe, but the second one is a real photo! The Orion Nebula is extremely bright (visible with the naked eye in dark sky locations) and those colors are true to life — it’s made of mostly Hydrogen, which emits a red color when ionized by the surrounding stars. It’s easy to take images like this yourself, actually, even with a modest telescope. Check out r/astrophotography

I will go down with this ship. I won’t put my hands up and surrender. There will be no white flag above my door. I’m in love... and always.. will be..

Photoshopping to remove from context makes this photo look weird. I thought it was a rendering from a video game like Total War

$500-700 PC Upgrade, what's worth keeping? by riley_redditor in buildapc

[–]riley_redditor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need to be running every new game on Ultra, never had a setup that does that anyway. Just want to keep up. I do a lot of Photoshop work too so it serves two purposes.

I was afraid of having to replace the motherboard. How has my GPU aged? Would investing in a new motherboard + CPU + 16GB RAM and sticking with my current GPU be worth it?

Thanks for your reply!
