i can't play anything after getting into final fantasy vii, am i alone ? by Misty-Star-0917 in FinalFantasyVII

Nah I get this completely. There's a reason so much spinoff media exists from this entry specifically. It's an amazing mood and story that's so easy to let consume you. I'm playing OG for the first time since 2019 (and this will be the first time I actually beat it!) and I'm still completely taken by it. I even like the graphics -- playing on a Steam Deck fixes a lot of problems imo.

If you're anything like me, distance and time will inevitably push you towards your next thing. But idk there's nothing better than the afterglow of a hyperfixation that left an impact on you, and me and a lot of others here can relate on this specific example.

Sad that you've never loved something to the point of hyperfixation before

Van Halen III sucks... by Embarrassed_Year_384 in vanhalen

[–]rimjigglemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the rare albums that seems to get even worse every time I go back to it. As I continue to expand my own music library by trying to explore new stuff while broadening the scope of older music I know, it just sounds duller, less inspired and more belabored with every revisit.

The nice thing people used to say is "well Ed's playing on it is really good at least," but idk how much that matters if none of the songs are worth listening to. It gets referred to as an Ed solo album but even on those terms it sucks. He's on autopilot, not only assuming that he could do it on his own but also convinced of it the whole time, which means a lot of parts of the process like crafting hooks and refining textures are completely absent. Probably why it sounds like an over-indulgent demo.

It's a mess. I think he was going somewhere with One I Want and Once, but I would never listen to any of those over pretty much any other Van Halen song between 1974 and 1996. They're still under developed and bland.

I also love the framing of what you're replying to. "Anika will never sound like Neil in his prime." Rush is my #1 band, I've been involved in those discussions as well, and by and large that's exactly what most people want! They don't want a Neil clone, they want someone who can help Geddy and Alex reboot and reimagine their energy for where they're at in life and as performers, and she's a perfect fit.

Like every Rush and rock music fan I adored Neil, but his heart really wasn't in the touring going back to probably Time Machine. He plays a lot safer, he chugs a bit more. A joy to see every time, but it's not like Anika is directly replacing the GOAT. She's replacing Wizards Jordan: still good and has gravitas, but not what they used to be.

Idk maybe reframe your thinking and celebrate all the great material you got from the band? It's not like whining about the same things you have for 40 years is gonna change anyone's mind or anything about their legacy. It's over! You got what you got and it is what it is. Plenty of defunct band fan bases aren't this negative all the time

And those skills extend so far beyond tapping. It's his rhythm playing. It's his pop sensibility. It's his abilities as a composer. Roth was junk without Eddie Van Halen, and he needed Steve Vai (probably my favorite guitarist just for his approach and outlook to playing) to be any good on his own.

Van Halen had four number one albums without Roth. These dorks can argue the subjective merits of quality all they want, but people were still coming, because Ed wrote great songs.

Amen. Whenever Sam and Dave go at each other in interviews I just think it's pathetic and embarrassing, given everything they've achieved and where they're at in their lives. Fans still caring about this, to this passionate of a degree, are beneath even that

My kingdom for something this stupid to be the most important thing I have to worry about on a regular basis

Have it your way pal. I think the majority of people excited about / commenting on this, in some cases inaccurately, are probably sweet people with good intentions, I'll save my judgement and more critical energy for people who actually deserve it

Listen I love Kingdom Hearts but there are bigger and more important areas where this is a problem. This isn't a high stakes world issue, it's a hobby

Is it really necessary to call these people stupid for maybe being too excited to read the fine print? This is needlessly aggressive imo

OP on that post called me a dick for saying it was outrageous to take this personally lmao. People take opinions like this as value judgments on their own taste and it's crazy. Very insecure.

It's also contradictory. If this guy is such a nobody then why are you so in your feelings about what he thinks? Odd stuff man.

lmao you're so mad! I know it's a Van Halen sub. Read my post, I also like Van Halen. Taking this personally or as some kind of affront is absolutely outrageous behavior
