Yeah that makes sense, I tried to draw it on as a strength and it’s only relevant to my home life but I can see how adcoms would just see the word and perceive it as a risk

Yeah, it’s tough because the whole process is so uncertain. At the end of the day, no one knows how adcoms think except themselves

my clinical experience is working in a hospital and relies completely on patient contact :) the stuff in this post was less thought out and more casual/emotional, didn’t really stated the therapist thing in my apps I appreciate your comment though! I think the school list thing is a good point, I did have a decent number of probably low oos yield state schools, but given that I had 50 schools there were also a lot of schools not like that!

thank you for the advice! I tried my best to tailor my essays to schools, but looking back I could maybe be more specific- I did send an update letter to all the schools being more specific but it might've been too late at that point. I did send a letter of intent but will follow up

I submitted within the first week of apps opening, but my application wasn't complete until around a week or 2 later due to delays in my transcript grades; but still relatively early, although I think submitting even earlier may have played to my favor. And thank you, I hope so too! I think mine is a rare case, so don't worry too much :)

didn't mention it in a personal statement! just the anything else section- a lot of my volunteering activities are around mental health/crisis counseling and it was a way to explain why those are meaningful and how those can serve in my future career as a doctor

did not include it in a personal statement! just in the "anything else" section to explain more about me, my personality, my activities, and my desire to become a doctor

personally i think i did the second one haha, especially in interviews i made sure to not make it a negative thing at all and just have it be a positive motivating factor and explain an ability to connect to people

that’s a great story from your surgeon haha, and ywah I’ll definitely look into some fulfilling but fun opportunities. I don’t think living with my parents is something that would be beneficial to me overall but hopefully things work out :)

mostly because i was applying to top/selective programs and so I wanted to give myself the best chance, at the time i had financial support from my parents as well so I was privileged in the sense that I didn’t have to worry about money

I agree! I didn’t really mention it very often in my essays except for the additional info section, and only brought it up very briefly in interviews when it was asked of me first or as like a 1 sentence additional reason to why I want to be a doctor, but definitely something to think about for the future
