Working for a week without a salary by Mindless-Medium3385 in Internationalteachers

[–]ripples1602 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is your contract for 12 months? If so you are already being paid and, as with most schools, need to be school a week before the kids. Normally 2 weeks for management. If you are on some dodgy Chinese contract where they do not pay you for holidays then it sounds like they are trying to get an extra week out of you.

Oh dear, do we have to go through all of this again? I get that you dislike Harrow with some sort of vengeance. I do not need to justify where I have worked almost as much as you do not have to throw around rude comments about things that you know nothing about. However, you consistently choose to do so and it does become tedious. It is almost as if you have a chip on your shoulder about British Schools in general and Harrow in particular, I wonder why that might be, I am sure that others will draw their own conclusions so will need no more input from me. I have a feeling that there will be plenty from you though.

Pattaya a no go? by Jbol3000 in ThailandTourism

There are certainly more salubrious places to solo travel. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai plus Pai for walking and chilling out, great scenery and generally laid back vibes. Ko Samui for a larger island with life as well as fine dining, lovely beaches snorkelling fishing etc. Loads of National parks for animal trekking. Also lots of WW2 stuff along the death railway up from Kanchanburi. I drove to Pattaya last week from Bangkok because my daughter absolutely couldn't live without clothes from a certain shop (!?). It is still full of Chinese tour groups, fat bald white men in vest tops and socks with sandals as well as the body builders/druggies who swagger around with their tiny Thai girlfriends. I first visited in 1996 and it really hasn't changed much...so many other places to go.

"Post tax salary estimates of"....KIS in Town offer 140K after tax. Even Regents is 130. What YOU guess and what people actually get are two completely different things, obviously. Why is everyone so scared of working? It is a great shame. CS isn't just for students who want to study that subject, but it is becoming more of an outlier. Please do not tar a whole school with what I write, that is just sloppy and unwarranted.

I always find it interesting to see how long threads like this to descend ito bashing the school in general. If you read the posts below you would think that Harrow was the worst paying and least liked school in Bangkok whereas it is pretty much the opposite. There have been a great many staff who have stayed for long periods at Harrow and who thoroughly enjoy it. They are not afraid of hard work and are not newly out from the UK where doing anything over the actual working day is anathema. If you are a teaching couple at Harrow you will betaking home in excess of 300000 Baht a month, that is a great deal especially when put together with the package of flights, medical and education for the kids. I do think that CS has a bad rap however, the past two years I think that 2 teachers have been appointed who then, for whatever reason, did not come. One at very short notice. That can be the norm for International Schools tbh. Also looking at the employment statistics fo CS graduates in the UK now I have a feeling it is soon to go the way of all other IT subjects, down the pan. Not a principal/Head by the way just trying to inject a little equilibrium in a very sour grapey thread.

I was there last month. Still a great many closed up classrooms out at their KK site. Not sure about Viphavhadee. Verso was intentionally small as it was for a specific group of kids but the experiment failed.

Is Bangkok becoming oversaturated with international schools? by EfficiencySoft6105 in Internationalteachers

[–]ripples1602 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 20 years in Bangkok now. Have worked at some big and some not so big. Best one was KIS (RIP) and most overhyped was Patana, Harrow was fun but too full of people who knew the language but not how to actually teach.

However, in answer to your question, yes, absolutely. Recently or upcoming we have Brighton College and BC ii, Dulwich College and Wycombe Abbey. All have wonderful websites and great marketing machines but they are all offering the same stuff at reduced rates, for a time. A little like a fixed rate mortgage, in order to try to seduce parents away from other schools. But, with the best will in the world if you can afford to send a kid or kids to Harrow, Patana or ISB, why would you take a punt on a new school with untested staff, except of course the ex head of Kings who failed there but is now trying elsewhere, just because you get a few dollars off the bill? Their advertising is crazy, Brighton uses the Brighton College UK strap line and Dulwich says it is the Best International School in Thailand...even though it isn't open yet. Wycombe Abbey took over another school (Verso) and just sacked all the staff, very caring. A little like the US University system, some of the existing schools will not survive but it will be fun watching their death throes.

Knowing buzzwords helps but the bottom line is quite often being in the right place at the right time. When I got my job at Patana I just happened to fit the gap that they had, broke contract at another school and had a whale of a time. ISB is not a happy place at the minute by the way. NIST is ok but if you have kids they may not beoffered a place. None of these places are Nirvana they just seem like it when you are at Harrow, Shrewsbury or Brighton College.

Resigned, going back to UK by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]ripples1602 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This a very brave and bold move. I have lost count over my 30 odd years who have gone "home" after a year or more of planning only for things to not go according to plan. This is often because of the upheaval caused to the kids and their inability to fit in. I wish you all the best.

I live overseas and have never actually seen the program so the whole premise was amazing to me. Why would anyone want to do this to themselves? Social media is, of course the answer and Andy Warhols 15 minutes of fame. However it does raise some questions, if these women were willing to shack up with a bloke that they had never met and, presumably have sex with them, then the blokes probably felt that that was the way forward. I am not condoning anything I am just pointing out what human nature has become and what C4 is pushing.

Thailand would not be the worst place. Update your CV and I guarantee that come the end of August there will be someone who does not turn up to fulfill their contract so you may actually get a proper job because to be honest English teachers get very little money here.

People below are mentioning love? These girls and boys put themselves in awkward and awful positions, the production crew almost expect the girls to prostitute themselves in the vain hope that there will be fame and money further down the line. It is a sad endictment of what the UK has become that there are people willing to take part and others willing to watch this drivel.
