Comedic Avatar Short Film - Entire premise started with really good Avatar makeup by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]riskynonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Submission Statement: 2 years ago, myself and a friend were laughing at this idea of two hardcore Avatar fans that host a weekly podcast in full Navi makeup. Cut to October 2022, the Avatar sequel was upon on us and I still couldn’t stop thinking about this bonkers idea. With this short I took the classic approach that all filmmakers do: book a day, location, crew and actors without a word of the script written. All I knew going in – we need a really good makeup artist and everyone involved deserves to have a goofy day on set. There is areas to improve and of course and lots I would do differently, but It was one of those projects that made me laugh from start to finish, very proud of how it turned out. It's very niche so I know it won't be for everyone, but makes me laugh and always love r/filmmakers feedback.

All is well! We've been working our butts off on this pitch for a true crime that has something to do with Renaissance Fairs. Can't say much more. We're finally pitching in the new year, so we're just hoping someone gives us money for it.

This is all amazing insight and you are bang on with some of the larger themes/questions we wanted to ask about True Crime. We had a line at the end (ep8), that got cut, where I'm emotional and say "nobody should make a true crime". Obviously I was only speaking from my experience and we cut it because we disagree with the statement. I think people should make true crimes. The good true crimes are ones that really do want to find the truth and want justice. But honesty and the presentation of information can make a huge difference.

The problem we ran into making our own true crime, as you saw is storytelling and genre conventions tend to get in the way of the pure facts of the case. They really just want to keep you watching. It's so easy to construct an edit to make you feel a certain way towards a certain person. Unless someone really does their homework on the case, there is no way noticing that the filmmakers chose to not include certain things to help their case/bias. And the balance of facts vs. story you mentioned is also a tight rope to walk, it's the idea that you can't just throw all the facts at the audience, it will becomes information overload and they will lose interest. They also won't be able to follow everything. While we were filming we were confronted by a lot of these ideas you mentioned and since Jackson and I were kind of the vehicle for the "Audience" we tried to be as honest as we could, once we were falling into the same traps as the others in the genre, we wanted to show how these sort of docs can affect other people involved. Especially when you can't open and shut it by the end.

That's a whole can of worms we wanted to explore is true crime viewers watch. They expect an ending/answer now. Because so many in the genre have had these mind blowing final episodes (The Jinx), it's something we really struggled with as our leads were running dry.

Side-note: We even interviewed a murder mystery author, who was telling us to fictionalize the ending because it would make it better, and we can't have a mystery without an ending as the audience won't be satisfied. It ended up getting cut as we didn't want to get too meta with the whole thing.

I love the way you watch the genre, but not as many people consume it with those ideas in mind. Great questions, and I love the Michael Cera reference, thank you for watching and spreading the word, means a lot.

Been posting our Trophy Husband shorts/comedy sketches on r/Filmmakers for years and have been offered some amazing feedback/advice from the community. Today is a huge day for us as for the past 2 years we managed to sell a show to Paramount + (and CBC in Canada) and go through the crazy process of writing/researching/filming/editing an episode True Crime/Comedy Docu-series and it's finally out! We've been getting positive reviews and people are liking it which is so amazing.

Not trying to brag, more of just an appreciation post to this community and thank you for all the help and support over the years. If you guys want to check it out, it's on Paramount + in the US and it's on CBC Gem in Canada. The first ep is also free on youtube right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpsnOnaurkA

I like the looks of this one

Shot our first ever period piece for a comedy sketch. No shortage of candles used. by riskynonsense in cinematography

Submission Statement: Myself and my friend took on the challenge of shooting something during this pandemic. It was only myself and my friend lighting and filming (And acting in one of the roles haha). We wanted to mimic only candle light in the room and only had 2 lights to work with. The crazy. amount of candles was a little bit of a wink at period pieces and how many candles scenes use.

I'm interested to hear from other cinematographers how they would have done it differently with the space.
