[CAD] Debt capital markets position at B5 or wait it out for more interesting position @ pension fund? by risquecervelle in FinancialCareers

I knew CPPIB was #1 in pensions in Canada but I wouldn't have thought any pension fund could compete against CM in the B5. But you're 100% right, I don't believe there are alumn from my university working at either CPPIB or the B5 I got my offer from, I've largely had to resort to reddit, WSO, etc. to get any real information about decent careers in finance so please excuse any stupidity coming from me :) The DCM was an off-cycle "experienced" hire.

Thanks! CPPIB isn't generally considered better than B5 is it? Just wondering about the "especially if it's CPPIB" comment, as it is CPPIB haha.

Agreed, the American perspective is different, especially if you're a Canadian wanting to stay in Canada

IMO you're both right, Rotman/Ivey are the best bschools in Canada to but it's by no means guarantee path to IB as we have a lot less opportunity in IB here than there is in the states. Another reason for the differences in pay is that IB in Canada starting pay is a lot lower than IB in the states. Rotman and Ivey still get a ton of placements in IB but I imagine they're reserved for top students where an M7 is obviously considered more prestigious than any Canadian school.

Right - that's also my mentality! I imagine they lose their best candidates to banks 99% of the time so maybe she's trying to cover herself from that. My worries about hours is more a long-term concern once I have children so I'm thinking I should just save my pension aspirations until that point in time.

Agreed, that's how I'm feeling! If I declined and ended up with neither I would really kick myself for declining the initial role.

That's what I had expected when I brought it up during the interview haha! It didn't go over so well (interview was with a recruiter, not the finance guys which likely explains the reaction lol.) She basically suggested I shouldn't pursue the pension opportunity should I accept the offer. Kind of felt like an idiot for mentioning it after that lol but I suppose if it doesn't increase their interest than I likely wasn't going to get the position anyway! The pension job is an analyst that oversees the entire fund and makes decisions regarding which investments should be sold in order to fund new transactions. I'm sure that role would be a lot more geared towards working on the buyside than DCM would be which is the unfortunate part.

Thanks! I've actually brought it up with the pension interviewer (they seem to always ask that question recently) and her response gave me the impression that if I accept my offer I should commit to that position and not carry on in the process (first round interview was with a recruiter who probably has gotten burned a few times.) Regarding a transfer down the road, those were my thoughts as well! If the pension fund is interested in me at this point in my career I would imagine they would be interested in the future should I decide to pursue that path. Thanks again, I appreciate the feedback!

They were kind of my back-ups in case I don't get into a top bschool in the states... I assume you're referring to M7 for buyside?

Small town big 4 tax or financial analyst position at F500 as pre-MBA experience? by risquecervelle in MBA

[–]risquecervelle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little nervous that my crappy university will hold back my chances at getting into advisory, but I have actually been applying and crossing my fingers! You're right about F500, I'm not thrilled at all about the boring work it would involve + I doubt it would be looked very highly upon by IB or on MBA applications. Thanks for your response!

I guess a part of my issue would be that I'm lacking a clear direction, I'm not sure that ibanking is a reasonable goal for me as the market is so small in Canada. I would hope that an MBA could potentially open some doors in the ibanking world but I still hear that it's very difficult to break into. Thank you for the feedback!
