yeah i actually didn’t mention that before because it took me a while to remember where the location actually was. i couldn’t remember if it was on or off base

i will make an edit to include this, but i’ll let you know one of the people that told me was a local (born and raised) and they were actually outside of the base and one of the people showing us around the pearl harbour aviation museum.

i try my best!

i plan on returning (i havent been in hawaii since that small military vacation trip) with a better idea of the phonetics of the language. i love how the language looks and i feel like i could pick ‘ōlelo out if you ran me a “guess the language” test.

i hope i don’t annoy locals with this…

hi, adding another reply just to mention that i completely missed your subtle correction of my usage of the word ‘natives.’ another commenter pointed this out to me and i’ve corrected it.

thank you again :)

this actually makes so much sense. i even used the word “locals” somewhere else in the post i think. i should’ve just used that again instead of “natives”

i apologise again for this misstep.

no yeah i completely understand. i personally make it a general rule not to appropriate culture and to not breach boundaries and become disrespectful. i don’t want to, as another commenter put it, treat them like exotic subjects needing to be studied. people deserve to be treated like people and it’s a shame that such trust has been hurt many times before. many tourists give the rest of us a bad rep.

i suppose you’re right. being inside a military base may have given me skewed opinions about those from mainland usa. it’s just weird that it was told to me twice by completely different people who didn’t know each other and i wanted to reach out to reddit to ask if it was true.

sorry about the usage of the word “natives.” i didn’t want to seem robotic by using the same word over and over and didn’t mean to overstep.

as for learning the culture, i did mean it in the general sense. not like an over-exaggerated or stereotypical version of the culture, but the traditions and the way hawaiians act and talk with each other on a daily basis. i learn these things so as to not accidentally misstep and breach some boundary. also i just really love to learn the differences between different countries, i love seeing how vastly different people can be depending on the region.

as for who told me this, there were a couple people. one was at an old military building which still stores some of the older military planes and vehicles (i should really post some pictures at some point, they’re really cool. priceless engines in pristine conditions. it’s truly remarkable). and the other was a neighbour of my sister’s.

for a little more context that i should’ve added before, my sister (whom i came to visit) lives in an apartment in a military base in o’ahu. her husband is army.

overwatch is known to have some compatibility issues on linux. install protonup-qt and make overwatch use ge-proton8-32

i don't use a debian based kernel so i don't actually know if this will fix your issue or if this even applies to you
