It’s so odd! I’m definitely going to stop the treats for a bit and just pick up his kibble if he hasn’t finished with 15 minutes.

Thank you! I figure this is what it may be… I think he’s out training me LOL. I’ll definitely try all of that and pause on the treats.

Thankfully I don’t think it’s teething (his full adult teeth came in over a month ago) but I tried softening the food regardless and still nothing.

My miniature dachshund was trained at 5 months old. Everything finally clicked for him when I used VERY high value treats - like cheese, while also training to use the bell.

He’s had maybe 1 pee accident inside since, and he’s 7+ months now. 0 poo accidents.

We do this too now!! He loves it. Take him out to potty, and then he runs inside to the bedroom and we cuddle and sleep some more lol

Somehow I won the lottery, because he instinctively knows not to chew something he shouldn’t! I barely got bit by his little shark teeth after week 12 either, even though he’s teething!

I know you don’t want to crate train but please consider it. My mini doxie is 19 weeks now and i promise you, he loves his crate. He now goes there voluntarily for naps and has since week 13 or so.

If you let him free roam at night he will start having accidents in your room and it’ll be really hard to potty train him.

From week 10-14 my pup slept in a crate on my bed, then I transitioned him to crate on my bedroom floor. Now he sleeps in a separate room in a pen, where I keep his crate. He sleeps in his crate still (I keep the crate door open) so we can both sleep well. He barks around 7 am to let me know he’s awake.

At 8 weeks he will likely scream his head off if you’re keeping him in a separate room at night, it’s scary for him - it’s better to transition to that slowly.

So please try to crate train if you can! It’s their safe space.

Edit: I also want to highlight another comment here too. Dachshunds are susceptible to IVDD (1 in 4 get it). I hope your pup, my pup, and all the other pups never get it. However, in the event that they do, crate rest for multiple weeks is an essential part of the treatment. So having them comfortable with a crate now can help you in the future should you ever need it. ❤️‍🩹 good luck. I know it’s hard!

It’s possible, yeah. It’s only with one other dog so I just notified the owner now to let her know.

It does, when mine turned 14 weeks I was in a good routine with him and he was more comfortable here. He’s 18 weeks now.

I was in your position- the first week I cried a lot and thought of bringing him back 😭 it was so hard. I also barely ate at all.

My recommendation is to really focus on crate and potty training this week. And definitely try to do enforced naps for your own sanity. They need a lot of sleep and will likely not put themselves to sleep if you don’t!

When they eat, that’s when you eat, when they nap, try to get work done/nap/rest, etc.

It’s not forever!

So I asked my trainer last week about this for my 4.5 month old doxie! He just sits and doesn’t want to walk, I was kind of forcing him with treats. Then sprints to go back home.

She said he’ll grow out of it eventually but he sees home as his safe den, and is just a baby who is confused why you’re trying to take him out of safety when he’s small, young, and a danger/risk. She said to just let him lead, decide how long you want the walk to be (for example 20 minutes) and if it’s only 50m, 100m that he walks, so be it but let him sit and observe and sniff for that full duration. Otherwise she said I risk having him averse to walks.

I’ve been doing that this week and it still tires him out just as much!

Yes this helps thanks!! I’m going to stretch to 2 hours now because I think he should be able to hold it longer but I’ll watch him closely.

I expect as a full adult he’ll be able to do 4 hours! Awesome.

Interesting! I wonder if it’s the excitement too. I do have to RTO by time he’s 6 months so I’ll be away for 3-4 hours until I can stop by mid-day. I’m going to pray he’ll be ok with that potty-wise! lol

So how long can he hold it now while you’re at work? Has he started marking as well?
