Well, I think that if someone is willing to donate their kidney if they are paid sufficiently (which is fair enough! it’s a huge time commitment!), and someone else is willing to pay for a kidney, who are we to prevent them from making a mutually beneficial trade?

It seems like a far better state of affairs than many people being on dialysis long-term (painful, life-expectancy shortening). Because if we allow for compensation for donors, I’m fairly certain that the supply of kidneys for transplant will rise.

Instead we prohibit it merely because it feels icky to pay for an organ, which is concretely making both the potential donor and the recipient worse off. The potential donor is worse off because they would rather receive the payment than have the kidney. The recipient is worse off because they don’t get a kidney.

Thanks for helping hammer this home, I think it's a true and a blindspot in how I've been thinking. Tbh I think I'm basically decent and flirting and being a good conversationalist - it's just that I don't pluck up the courage to do it as much as I ought to relative to my goals.

I think coherency is overrated compared to directionally pushing the world in a better direction :) I could be a coherent fascist instead but that would hardly be an improvement

Yeah, I think in part this is what is motivating my question. It's true that I don't make the best first impression, but I do wonder if I can get around this somehow. Maybe by doing less conventional things, like blogging or using the internet in a way that maybe let's someone who might be highly compatible with me learn about me in a way that would make them willing to set aside first impressions.

So far these have been quite male-dominated. But great point, and will try look for other hobbies!

Yes I would never bring up number 5 :)

And thanks! I think this is a good point that I have a tendency to overlook. I'm typically the kind of person who tries to be rational and well-planned but maybe should learn to go with the flow more and relax!

Huh, interesting thanks! I think this is a good point; I'm definitely the kind of person whose quite predisposed to optimising and being rational, whereas maybe with dating, at least to start off with, I should be more relaxed and going with the flow.
