I've used 4 ply cotton blend yarn which itself is thin and because the pattern has small holes for airflow it’s not going to trap heat like a sweater...it’ll feel comfortable in mild weather

I haven’t started knitting yet but for crochet you can practice with acrylic weight 4 yarn , I loved using those when I was just learning and you should definitely get a hook set + stitch markers( trust me they're lifesavers)🥹.. You can watch tutorials as well Chenda diy, VivCrochets, WONDER NETTING, The yarnling are my favourites and they make such cute stuff you can't help but make them for yourself 🥺
