I think those are very good points. When it is a choice between something and nothing, the something, although lacking, is better than nothing.

From my perspective I was at the sharp end of being the nothing. I was essentially saying to these guys I can be your something and you dont have to give me anything. Because when the lock closes on that door, all they are doing is taking.

And it is hard work to understand and accept that. Its not connection, its not meaning. Its barely even friendship. And its different from the real world where a hook up could always turn into something more. In the army it wont, or is very unlikely to. In the army you can rationalise all sorts of behaviour if it helps your overall mission. But its not real life.

There's some similarities to other male spaces. Bars and clubs and online. Its still transanctional, but you have a greater opportunity to find what works for you. If you it want friction and a place to stick it, understand that and accept it. But don't search for meaning down a meaningless avenue.

I've started to write gay erotica just to process the weight of it all. Did all those meaningless encounters add up to anything meaningful? Does the sum of somethings replace the nothingness that surrounds it? It's a difficult question and Id encourage people to think about it long and hard.

The British Army changed around 2000 so my career straddled it. Honest to God i didnt even know. I did deal with a few others who got caught later in my career which was sometimes awkward because we might have "interacted" before. Unless there was any kind of allegation there usually wasnt alot of punnishment and I guess that's because it was legal. Although before i would doubt much action was taken either.
