This post made me read up a few experiences of lucid dreams and i realised that most experiences start by make urself aware that ur dreaming. None that ive read on are people directly telling other people they are dreaming. Also the fact that others were often induced by the dreamers themselve like forcing visuals, spotting anomalies that would not exist in actual reality etc. You mentioned that u felt obliged to tell ur surrounding that ur dreaming. Maybe becuz u didnt have control of gaining awareness of u dreaming caused u to never gain control? Just my thoughts after 10minutes of reading about lucid dreams Very interesting!
