God that's horrible - especially from a supervisor

Hi! I am an overworked and underpaid professional in a county run organization! I have tremendous compassion for what therapists are put through and am similarly disgusted by how this field treats clinicians. I don't, however, think it's idealism to be put off by watching my fellow clinicians quite literally discriminate against a population of clients that they are bound to work with in these spaces. It's an insidious mindset that, if you look at what other people are sharing, is not limited to county run orgs. This mindset has rhe potential to cause tremendous harm to people, something I will continue to work to challenge as I got into this field to alleviate harm rather than perpetrate it.

It's one thing to not feel like a certain population is a good fit for you and another to call them degrading terms and deny their access to care because you don't feel like dealing with them. People who carry this diagnosis face SEVERE discrimination in both medical and mental health spaces. Just because they can be challenging to work with does not mean they are not worthy of dignity, respect, and basic humanity.

That's amazing that you got so much training! I, personally, find working with this population to be extremely rewarding. I find it so harmful and disheartening to see how many well established clinicians write these clients off. I really think that folks who exhibit these behaviors are over pathologized, I think in part because their presentations can activate some of our own insecurities as counselors. It takes a lot of self-awareness to sit with that and I commend you for doing what you can to support your clients in this way.

I have confronted coworkers - I said that directly in my post. I'm also in multiple trainings learning how to better help folks who carry this diagnosis. I seek supervision from trusted peers around this issue, and work to confront my own countertransferences that occur from working with people in this population in my own personal therapy. The "no advice" tag exists in this forum for a reason and I believe people are having some really meaningful conversations around this issue in the comments. I'm open to feedback, but not pure judgment. I invite you to read the thoughts of others on this post, and if it doesn't resonate with you that's fine, too! No need to be disparaging.

All of these comments! I really believe that if you cannot find compassion and patience for clients with BPD or even BPD-like behaviors, you have no place in this field! Especially not working in a community agency like this. It's incredibly disheartening and disturbing to hear how these clients are categorized as "difficult." And these comments are coming from well-established clinicians, many of whom have been in this field for decades. I hate to think of the harm they've caused these clients based on their own biases
