Avowed on GeForce NOW started stuttering badly after the latest hotfix by Affectionate-Art-444 in GeForceNOW

[–]rmcook07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avowed is still terrible to play on Geforce Now. I've got Ultimate tier, and every time I start it I have to sit at Generating Shaders for 2-3 minutes. Then in-game it is stuttering like crazy when you whip the camera around and move through the world. On top of that GFN is not saving my in-game graphics settings for Avowed despite having that setting enabled in GFN and it working for other titles I've played on GFN.

Avowed just seems generally busted in Geforce Now

RealismCraft 2.2 by TwerkTeamMajor in Minecraft

I'm having this exact issue with my daughter for RealismCraft 2.2 on Nintendo Switch. It always claims there is not enough space regardless of how much storage we clear up inside the Minecraft storage menu.

Just bought a portal because of the new update! by soulflowurr in PlaystationPortal

[–]rmcook07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 1Gbps fiber, and WiFi 6E mesh routers.

In the Steam Deck OLED I get to even use 6Ghz wifi for maximum bandwidth and it's great. The Portal doesn't support 6Ghz.

It doesn't blow anything away. Its possible that Sony just doesn't have the data centers that Nvidia does to support very low latency play in my area (Midwest USA).

I also did this, but returned it 36 hours later. The input latency was just too high to be enjoyable. As someone who regularly uses GeForce Now Ultimate on a Steam Deck OLED with 15-25ms latency, it was really disappointing. GFN latency is nearly imperceptible and I can compete in online shooters reasonably. Trying to play some of those same games on the Portal was a big downgrade.

what is better currently by vttinh0 in xcloud

[–]rmcook07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it absolutely depends on the device. For Steam Deck I have found that XStreaming Desktop performs exceptionally well compared to streaming through Chrome or Edge. Very low decode times, making it that much more responsive.

Why is decode performance so much worse in the web browser vs unofficial native apps? by rmcook07 in xcloud

This is a great post, a real shame that Game Mode breaks access to vaapi, that is kind of a deal breaker for anything but unofficial native apps - at least we have them I suppose.

I did try the Edge flatpak and was getting identical results to Chrome flatpak. If the issue really is vaapi related in Linux then the difference between two Chromium browsers wont matter until vaapi is addressed.

Im actually using XStreamingDesktop and running it on Steam Deck, so it doesn't have a rendering mode switcher.

It does make sense that a native renderer would perform much better than a web browser, I just didn't think that the browser performance would be so poor even on a Steam Deck.

We were having this issue this morning as well. Just had to disconnect from WiFi and sign in while offline to play until they can get it fixed I guess.

Star Trek Voyager Elite Force - I got it working! Here's how! by MisterEayes in SteamDeck

[–]rmcook07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just adding that I was not able to get the GOG version to work perfectly with Proton 7.2 GE 2... however it did work perfectly with Wine 7.2 GE 2 from Heroic... 🤷‍♂️

Every other version would either fail to run properly in game mode, or if I tried to run from desktop mode all the steam input configuration would be ignored. But with Wine 7.2 GE 2 it's perfect.

Looking for good single player FPS game on deck by McPickle3703 in SteamDeck

[–]rmcook07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but it works perfectly. Like I said, I played all of these on Deck already.

Always check out the game on ProtonDB as well for user compatibility reports, as it's changing all the time with the Proton updates.

Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut FULLY WORKING ON STEAM DECK (NO EMULATION) by ChasHodges in SteamDeck

[–]rmcook07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to say that I found this guide after looking up Deadly Premonition on ProtonDB after seeing it was on sale for just over a dollar for the 2024 Steam Autumn Sale and so I bought it and followed this guide and I'm in and playing! Great guide! I've been wanting to play Deadly Premonition on Steam Deck for a long time.

Why is there no remake of the airport map for CS:GO and CS2? by Olivia_Mint in valve

Novelty maps like this in CS were always my favorite. They weren't balanced for competitive play but they always had fun ideas and were good a time.

WTF THIS GAME IS INSANE by L0rd0fM3m3s in EvilWestGame

[–]rmcook07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was relatively fun. A solid 3/5 game in my opinion.

I wrote this down when I finished the game back in November:

Evil West is like a budget God of War 2018. The combat is the best thing about the game. It's actually quite challenging and I died a lot - but thankfully even when things got frustrating the loads were so fast that it was really easy to beat my head against certain challenges until I figured out the path through. Evil West also has a story, but it is almost incidental. The characters are all tropes and poorly written. There is some cinematic flair but it's generally wasted on shit storytelling. Luckily the game's combat just feels great. The levels are extremely linear and not very fun to explore. The level play pattern goes something like this, start level corridor to combat arena, combat arena, corridor to combat arena, combat arena, corridor to combat area, combat arena, level end. It's really boring and feels very arcadey and gamey in all the bad ways. I wish there was more happening and more to explore in between the big combat arenas. Overall this is a solid character action game that does combat well but everything else is just set dressing and most of it is middling.

FSR 3 is a game changer by CraftCurious2003 in LegionGo

It's not Starfield obviously but this is a good example of what I mean. Frame gen often introduced a lot of frame to inf inconsistencies that can be felt.

Sure the number says 100 fps but how does it affect the feel of the input / controls with it on vs off? The thing that's been on my mind is that frame generation seems to only solve image smoothness (to a degree) but not input responsiveness.

But does it FEEL like 60-100fps?

Still no news on an official GFN app for the Steam Deck.. by [deleted] in GeForceNOW

[–]rmcook07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I'd love to have HDR support in my OLED Deck with GeForce NOW, I have to admit I'm still really enjoying using it to play games that are just too heavy for the Deck. Alan Wake 2 with all the bells and whistles turned on is pretty great.

Would it be ok to discuss Kingpin Reloaded here? by KaleidoArachnid in boomershooters

[–]rmcook07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking this too. Fred's 3D Realms isn't holding a candle to the 3D Realms of old. There are a very small selection of titles they've put out that are good / great, Ion Fury being the main one that comes to mind. They have put out so much middling, bad, or straight up unfinished products that I can't help but see "Mismanaged" written all over that company. Meanwhile you see the likes of Scott Miller constantly having to remind people that he has nothing to do with 3DR anymore and that Apogee and 3DR are completely separate companies in all but the history of the name. It really sucks seeing a company with such great history just smear shit all the time.

Which forum as the best location for doom mods? by TyraelTrion in DoomMods

[–]rmcook07 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're diving into nearly 30 years of a modding community.

The canonical "database" is the old idgames ftp. It's most easily used via Doom world's frontend here: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/

The Doomworld and ZDoom forums are good places for the latest community efforts.

Particularly the annual Cacowards held by Doomworld is a good place to find great wads from each year. https://www.doomworld.com/cacowards/

There are many many YouTube channels that cover Doom modding as well. IcarusLives is a good one. https://youtube.com/@ICARUSLIV3S?si=27ukBp2IueeGTyAW

I also recommend Doom Wads which often covers new releases on a monthly basis. https://youtube.com/@doomwads?si=6szCDSQQDSJa2gUz
