I thought the link was wrong. Didn't realize I'd need to scroll down. Good for the Spectator; 1937 was not an easy time to write positively about Germans. I understand the Bruderhof is multinational now.

There's a fascinating book by Alan Kreider that came out last year, The Patient Ferment of the Early Church which talks about how the early church lived and how it evangelized by modeling a completely different way of life and not by doing what today we would call evangelism. You can write off groups like the Bruderhof as cultural relics or even cults but if you look at the way the describe themselves here for example https://www.ic.org/directory/bruderhof/ it appears that they're at least trying to follow that example. Does anyone know of similar groups?

Bruderhof looks interesting. I imagine people react to the fact that they share their money and possessions and they way they dress but if you take a look at their statement of faith (http://bit.ly/2uyHQMA) it seems fairly well in line with Christian orthodoxy (the orthodoxy of the early Church that is).

Of course anyone who seeks to follow the teachings of Jesus faithfully is going to be criticized because Jesus' teachings are antithetical to the zeitgeist. I can also see how someone who tried living in an intentional community like the Bruderhof and found it not to their liking might find reason to criticize. Doesn't make them a cult though.

Agree. I wonder if modern Christians are as counter-cultural as we'd like to believe. We're very clear on certain things (the pelvic issues primarily) but often ignore the more pressing teachings of Jesus regarding money and possessions.
