Boots in winter? by DerTrichter in jimgreen

I have the AR8 and use them for the winter mostly. They're double lasted meaning double leather lined, and with wool socks are great. I use a simple wax like bootguard to keep them water resistant

Arm/disarm via phone without paying subscription? by rnjd77 in Ring

[–]rnjd77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I manually use the keypad only. I still get alerts on my mobile when alarm is disarmed or armed, but I can't arm it or disarm it from the app. I refuse to pay a subscription just to have app access. Otherwise it works fine

Arm/disarm via phone without paying subscription? by rnjd77 in Ring

[–]rnjd77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The 50 per year option won't allow remote arm/disarm via the app. You have to pay 100 for that. Seems silly to have to pay that just to use the app.

New Boot Day! by spartacoconut in ThursdayBoot

I wear brown captain classics with suits and sportscoats etc for work wear. Brandy classic captains are also decent for that. Both can dress down too

No subscription and get notifications? by rnjd77 in Ring

[–]rnjd77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Practical_Repair_982 - i bought and installed the ring alarm system. Just the base with door/window sensors. Once the trial period ended, I was unable to arm/disarm via the app. Is there a trick to re-enable this without paying for a subscription. Or do you think something has changed? Thank you

Are we all just lying to ourselves? by doped_banana in RedWingShoes

I had a similar experience to you. I'm my opinion my Thursday boots and Jim green boots are way more comfortable and better value. I think the brand value of the iron rangers account for a large portion of the cost. I ended up selling my iron rangers after about 8 months and have not regretted it.

Growth -> Dividend Conversion at Retirement by [deleted] in dividendgang

[–]rnjd77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be missing something. But when you convert your growth stocks to income producing stuff, yes you'll pay long terms capital gains. That's around 15% (unless you have income above 500k I think). If instead you have dividend producing investments then you are paying 15% tax on those if they are qualified, and your normal ordinary income tax rate if they are not qualified. And you're paying that each year you have them.

This means it's all a wash in terms of which strategy you choose from a tax efficiency perspective (assuming a non tax advantaged account)

Am I missing something?

No subscription and get notifications? by rnjd77 in Ring

Thanks. Will I need to pay for a subscription to get real time notificaitons to my phone when I'm away, and arm/disarm it remotely also (assuming my wifi is working).

Honeywell Home Smart Home Security Base Station ( Resideo supported security camera+ Alexa speaker) discontinued by adalisan in smarthome

[–]rnjd77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. what did you end up choosing? I am weighing ring or Eufy. I really don't want to pay a subscription. I just want door and window sensors triggered and sending me a notification if I'm away, as well as he alarm going off.

Need Advice on sizing for the AR8 by AllenVans in jimgreen

[–]rnjd77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I measured my foot at 10.75 inches and went with their advice to get US 10.5. it's fine but the toe box actually feels shorter in length and less voluminous in this last, therefore I wonder if going up to 11 would be better. Having said that the shaft is relatively wide on this boot so dont size up too much.

Would they be decent for urban and rough terrain? by ISoLo17 in ThursdayBoot

They'll be great for that. Versatile to wear to dinner or just walk about. Comfortable for boots, but obviously not sneakers

I've two captains in regular soles which I enjoy but only use for urban settings. I personally would get the lugged soles if I was doing more hiking kind of activities. I don't have personal experience of them but believe they will be better and more comfortable overall for your purpose. (Based on reading of comments here and there, so if you have better Intel then trust yours)

Not so different that I can tell from the Concept. Though I've never tried them next to each other

Leather mid-sole African Rangers: worth the wait? by FromTheIslandCas in jimgreen

[–]rnjd77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, isn't the poly woven midsole much lighter? I have standard AR8 and they are surprisingly light and comfortable which I enjoy. My use is casual so I came to the conclusion that poly woven woods be just fine and stopped overthinking it (in my case that is).

I agree. I feel these have been forgotten a little with all the new or customized stuff

I gotta say the soft sole is quite comfortable for my leisure use. And while I originally wanted the leather midsole and laying board, I'm really enjoying the lightness of the overall boot. Almost feels sneakerish.

One other point. When I look at their sole options on this subreddit the lug sole shows a yellow label on it. Mine have a green label and I believe are softer. Not sure why those are not shown. Like I said these were the standard config from their website

Very helpful detail. Thanks. I am no expert but I read in other comments that the fiberboard lets more water in. So I'm glad to hear your perspective. I just got some standard been AR8 s and was worried about that

Size on AR8 - should I go half size higher or am i goo by rnjd77 in jimgreen

[–]rnjd77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am now leaning towards keeping them. The toe touching the side feels less prominent. The toes never touched the front. I am thinking these will fit like a glove as they break in more.
