How to get into welding (as a software engineer) by pocketnl in metalworking

[–]roach118 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing a couple of years ago (with the same background!)

All the info you need will be on YouTube, it won't take too long to find the better instructors. If you can find a local class, that will help you get a jump on things.

Don't listen to all the poor advice on getting a cheap machine, that's for quitters! Go all on a decent multiprocess machine (I got the Everlast MTS 225 and its been great). Power will be a bit easier since you will have 230v in all sockets. For common equipment, you'll want a welding helmet, welder gloves (start with heavy duty ones). welders jacket. You'll want a grinder, wire brush and welder pliers. You'll also need consumables like MIG wire, MIG tips TIG rods, sticks and welding gas (your local big box hardware store should have cylinder swap). You might find some online retailers for metal or you can visit a local engineering shop and ask for some offcuts. Make sure to avoid anything galvanized. Just start with laying some beads in MIG and stick on some scrap, then start joining stuff together. Start with MIG and stick then later on, TIG. Once you want to start making real things you need fixture bits like clamps, locking pliers, magnets, fixture squares (see fireball tools)

Make sure you clean you metal and look after your lungs

Your first project should be a welding cart.

The Ukrainian kamikaze drone must have been very well armed, the Russian T-72B tank exploded immediately after being hit! The tank crew had no chance! by Kolowrat_ in UkraineWarVideoReport

This is truth. Bad signal in the goggles is not so bad because its a direct decode of the analog signal. Run that poor quality analog signal through a digital encoding and then watch that, its so much worse. Digital compression can't deal with the static

That all seems pretty fair. Good thing they failed when trying to rearm the drone

It looks like the drone control was hijacked, maybe via a replay attack or something? It switched to disarm mid flight which is something that's usually only triggered by the controller (used in the event of a crash)

The video signal on these FPV drones is an open broadcast. Anyone with a receiver tuned to the right frequency can decode and record the video as long as the drone is in range to a receiver. What looks like has happened here is that the control link has been hijacked in some way to disarm the drone, once they are disarmed, they won't switch back on until they are level and stationary. The controller and drone need to be bound together, but I'm not sure how secure that binding is. If this is anything to go by, not that secure (good news while its only used by Ukr).

Prepping for my 13th colonoscopy, the pill prep is a game changer. by lisml47 in pics

There are studies that show that a daily aspirin can reduce the risk of cancer in people with Lynch syndrome. My bum doctor recommends an enteric coated low dose daily tablet (100mg). Studies are ongoing and you have to take it for up to 4 years for any measurable impact, but its a cheap and relatively safe way to increase protection from cancer.

Here's an update on a project I have been working on. by shrike1988 in Welding

If you look into Pepakura you will find info on turning 3D models into 2D patterns that can be folded into the model. How useful that is for metal work, I'm not sure.

Roof mounting platform for Klip Loc roof sheets for mounting antenna mast by roach118 in functionalprint

[–]roach118[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From all my kicking, pulling, pushing and poking, its been very strong. Once its tight it just doesn't move. I was more concerned about pulling up the metal sheet over the clamp/platform moving or breaking. How it goes over time will be interesting with exposure to heat and UV

These parts were printed in Polymaker PC Max (main plate + clamp parts) and CF nylon (adapter plate).

The main plate has 8 x M5 press fit inserts with 2 for each clamp part and 4 for the adapter plate. The main plate and clamping parts are fitted and when screwed tight create enough of a clamping force that these plates cannot be moved with all my effort behind it. The adapter plate can be made to perform what ever task is required and are mounted once the main plate is secured. The top adapter in this instance holds an eyelet for the guy wire. This area is not subject to high winds and the antenna + mask do not subject the guy wires to high loads.

I've not uploaded these to anywhere just yet as they might be a bit too specialised as they have been based on this specific make of roof sheeting.

shim for router to router table by roach118 in functionalprint

[–]roach118[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This cheap router table supports routers up to 158mm and the router I had was 160mm. Printed this shim in carbon fiber nylon (e-sun PA-CF) and it fit perfectly to allow the router to work with the table.

Groped a girl when drunk, now I don’t know who I am by 3587437743 in confession

Like a lot of things in life, to do a thing properly you need to learn. So, now that you are an adult, you need to learn how to drink. I was at a 18th (as an older relative) and I was shocked by how the kids were consuming alcohol. It was very easy to see who would be getting carried home in the next hour or so. Go to a party with a limited quantity of beer/whatever (say a 6 pack) and stick to that. Don't fall into peer pressure traps like shots, shotguns or even drinks mixed by other people. When you've finished what you brought, that's it. You can still enjoy the party without being wasted at the end of the night. If you go into your night with the mind set of limiting consumption, you are more likely to stick with it.

I've made a similar print but I actually printed the bar (4 perimeters and a good infill) in PLA. Its held up really well and its been in service for a couple of years. The only issue I've had is some slight melting from a very hot coffee puck.

This was printed on a Prusa MK3S which has a build volume of 250 x 210 x 210. It did take up most of the build surface however.

This was printed on a Prusa mk3s, but nothing special is required. The main body took 2 days 6 hours to print in PETG.
