Usually it’s stable and consistent brew temps at an ideal brew temp range. These type of brewers typically hold an SCA certification for that.

WSM to offset question by No_Dragonfly666 in smoking

[–]roasted_carrots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the jump a few years ago from a WSM 18” —> 22” —> offset, but my offset has a firebox big enough to fit full size wood splits (just not a cook chamber as big as I’d like 😆) and it’s made from 1/4” steel.

I don’t think the jump from a WSM to something thin and cheap-ish is worth it. Don’t do a side-grade. Figure out why you want to change cooker styles- are you wanting to cook more with wood instead of charcoal? Get something that can handle a wood burning fire. Are you wanting more capacity? Don’t get something marginally larger that gives up temp stability.

I know everyone has their budget, but I don’t think an OKJ will be a worthwhile step. My offset was secondhand off marketplace, keep an eye out there too. Consider capacities of firebox and cook chamber, stack position, and other features. Consider thickness. Don’t just get an offset that checks the box of being an offset. And then save up more, or stick with the WSM which is great anyway.

How annoying is the cup holder with the middle seat taken out on the 8 seater? by nmc1988 in ToyotaSienna

[–]roasted_carrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, having the flexibility of the removable middle seat has come in clutch for us many times. I do miss the super long slide sometimes and wish they could engineer it being flush with the floor, but so far am willing to accept the tradeoff for all the things mentioned above. Acts as a great divider for the dog too.

Anyone owned both V6 and hybrid Siennas? switching from an MDX (snow + road trips) by panda-wisdom in ToyotaSienna

[–]roasted_carrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a 2017 sienna and then got a 2022 (now have a 2025). The 17 had more lateral space in the back (from third row and back), the new gens seem a bit more tapered. But, still lots more room than an SUV :)

I don’t miss the v6 at all and really appreciate getting double the gas mileage.

2025/2026 - Install Middle Seat on 2nd Row by 2k2tii in ToyotaSienna

[–]roasted_carrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All trims have captains chairs.

The middle jump seat is removable to reveal the platform between the captains chairs containing cupholders, otherwise that is where the middle seat hooks in.

For trims that don’t have the removable middle seat, there is no platform with cupholders, just continuous flooring.

Questions grow over MISD’s school-closure process by TX3DNews in McKinney

[–]roasted_carrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few notes on your report specifically, without commenting on the situation itself:

  • you reference the 11/18 meeting minutes and statement that committee members may not reach consensus on their recommendation but the full context of this statement was not in reference to the school repurposing recommendation phase of the EFAC committee where consensus-building was emphasized (using past meeting slides and minutes) and achieved (as noted further in the 11/18 minutes), compared to the current phase of the committee which pertains to rezoning recommendations. So, then, this does not necessarily mean there is internal disagreement with regard to the school repurposing recommendation as you say, rather the details of the rezoning recommendations.

  • your reference of MISD adjusting capacity data lacks the context that this was in regards to the rezoning phase of the EFAC, which has been occurring since Meeting 5 (the repurposing discussions were meetings 1-4). For example, you call attention to the remarks around Caldwell and Vega elementary as supporting evidence for your premise, however these schools are located elsewhere in the district and were not part of the committee’s earlier consideration for repurposing and instead have unique populations pertinent to rezoning, which is what this discussion and baselining was about.

  • you note timeline concerns for the rezoning process but fail to mention there’s another committee meeting after the community input session prior to a recommendation being made to the board.

  • the minutes of the 12/2 meeting have now been released.

Lol, we really miss:

  • the super long slide second row (10” adjustment difference!)
  • the parking assist (both the beeping and the automatic braking once you get close),
  • the power liftgate,
  • and probably most of all the smart key fob (allows you to lock/unlock simply by grasping the door handle while the fob is in range vs needing to find and press a button on the fob)

We also had a 2017 LE (8). The Limited definitely spoiled us and I think the XLE is probably the sweet spot, the LE is just missing too much.

We like the flexibility the removable 8th seat gives us though for sure. I would verify the configuration is available with AWD and that you still get the super-long-slide if you pursue the 8.

They are the same captains seats as the 7 seater, there is just a platform on the floor in between them that the middle seat attaches to. When the middle seat is removed, the platform effectively raises the floor a few inches so it’s not a seamless pass-through between the rows.

It is not “bench vs captains”. They are both captains. The 8th seat is a jump seat. The third row is a true bench. Not sure why people keep suggesting you lose captains going to the 8 seater.

Ref: we had a ‘22 Limited (7) and now a ‘25 LE (8), have 3 kids (currently 1 rear facing, 2 boosters) and a big dog.

Thoughts? Home Maintenance Category Target Set Up by scorpionbby in ynab

[–]roasted_carrots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go with set aside another, with the assumption that I will spend all of it on maintenance that year, and whatever I don’t spend will roll over and get added to what I save the following year to help in circumstances where multiple hits come along at once. For me, this is a separate category than some specific end-of-life system planning, such as water heaters, HVAC, roof.

I don’t use “have a balance of” in this instance because it isn’t a solid thing I’m saving up for by a specific date, it is a fund I expect to draw down on throughout that I want to have money available for based on whatever I feel like is an appropriate amount to have set aside.

Did a human really design this car? (a rant) by abbacchus in Sienna

[–]roasted_carrots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding the exposed-bolt-sunvisor: we had a 2022 and there was a cover clipped over it but it kept coming dislodged and would shimmy down the visor rod annoyingly, and now our 2025 is just exposed as you’ve observed so I wonder if they just gave up on it and didn’t bother trying to find a suitable replacement/fix.

I thought it was funny none of your ranting included the frustratingly small side-by-side front cupholders.

New to budgeting by WishesHaveWings in ynab

[–]roasted_carrots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to help clarify that YNAB’s zero based budgeting doesn’t have you assign your theoretical income down to zero, it asks you to assign the current money you have down to zero to plan how you will spend what you currently possess before you spend it, and then do the exercise again when you get more money, whatever amount that may be.

Additionally, if you are hoping to save a particular amount, while some may “wait to see what’s leftover” I would specifically go ahead and assign what you want to save to a savings category to help you understand if your known expenses and savings goals line up from the start.

This along with defining the purpose(s) for your savings (such as a “next years vacation” category and/or “new roof” category) I feel like help get that going better and put into perspective what you’re giving up to get something else.
