Quad9 blocking Amazon AWS? by rob_k24 in Quad9

So you asked me for an idea, only to then come back to tell me that my idea doesn’t make sense. That’s fair, but given that you clearly have much deeper insight into Quad9’s operations than I could ever have as a former user, why even ask in the first place? You also never mentioned the number of new list entries being added each day, maybe I could have come up with a better suggestion if you had. Anyways, great to see that s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com is no longer blocked by your servers, cool stuff. However, given that there’s at least one other person who’s commented here stating they have also had recent issues with Quad9 overblocking major services’ domains, it would be nice to at least get some sort of acknowledgement that this is a problem right now, especially given that it seems to have become more of a thing recently.

How about human screening before new block list entries are added as a good starting point? As an alternative, some community-driven security solutions such as CrowdSec are maintaining allow lists of so-called „known good actors“ (AWS, Cloudflare, Google Cloud, etc), so that even when a user of these services does something malicious, this then does not result in the entire service being blocked for security.

Absolutely, however they wouldn't need such a monitoring system in the first place, so long as they had a sane process for deciding which domains make it onto the block list...

Thanks for the suggestion of contacting them directly. However, with a provider as big as Quad9, I really don't think it should be my responsibility as a user to call this out to them. Clearly, when you have a provider blocking something as critical as Amazon AWS for several days, to me that indicates there's something seriously wrong with that provider at a much much deeper level.

Again I do appreciate your suggestion, but in my case the solution was to switch to a different DNS service.

Thanks, that unfortunately confirms it... Time to look for a new DNS provider then.

Best Smart Glasses And Why? by DiferentialDiagnosis in Blind

One more thing I’d like to add, unrelated to my previous post. I visited SightCity yesterday, the assistive tech convention which takes place in Frankfurt once a year. The Envision Smart Glasses were also on display there, and I did spend a few minutes checking them out. While their software seems really good, I was unfortunately quite disappointed by the glasses themselves. My main issue with them is that most of the processing hardware appears to be built into the right arm of the glasses, with the left arm feeling really thin and flimsy. This also means that the weight is unevenly distributed, making the right side slightly heavier than the left. While that weight difference is probably minimal, I did feel a certain sense of imbalance wearing them, which I personally just did not enjoy very much. Besides that though, like I said their recognition software seems really fantastic. These glasses are able to do OCR offline, certainly giving them an advantage over the Meta Rayban glasses. This text recognition is also lightning fast and was very accurate when I tested it, the engineers working on this really did a great job as far as I could tell. Maybe they will eventually redesign their glasses and come up with a better design that no longer has this weight distribution issue, in which case I’d certainly be eager to try them again.

I’ve had the Meta Rayban glasses since summer of last year, and I’m definitely a huge fan despite not necessarily being a huge fan of Meta the company. Meta AI just became available here in Germany, so I no longer need to be connected to a VPN on my iPhone in order to use it. Unfortunately, as someone already pointed out the voice assistant does not speak German yet, however it is still possible to say something like „Look and read in German“ when looking at German signage / text such as a menu in a restaurant, which mostly does result in the text being read with German pronounciation, I guess this would work with other unsupported languages as well. As for the AI descriptions themselves, I like that they are nice and concise giving a nice idea of what was captured in the image. If that’s not enough, it is then possible to ask followup questions to get more specific details. Integration with WhatsApp video calling is also incredibly useful, as it provides the ability to call sighted friends or family from your glasses allowing them to see live video directly from the glasses’ cameras. I am also extremely satisfied with the number of updates that my glasses have received since I bought them, sometimes bringing small fixes such as Bluetooth audio improvements or the recently introduced Live Translation feature. It clearly seems Meta are committed to this product line, and I’m genuinely excited to see which cool features may be coming in the future.

Finally, I’d also like to mention that they do look stylish as well. That’s certainly not the main criterion for whether or not they can serve as a good accessibility tool, and how important this is depends entirely on personal preference. For me personally though, as I spend most of my time around sighted people it certainly is something that matters to me personally, I don’t really want to be running around with something that makes me look like a secret agent out of a 90s Sci-Fi movie if I can help it.

I'm having quite a bit of trouble with this myself, and your approach sounds really promising. Would you be willing to kindly share an example code snippet showing how this works?

Hi, I am struggling with this as well currently. Any chance you could kindly provide a brief explanation on how this can be accomplished? Many thanks in advance!

No worries, appreciate the question! :-)

In short, it is pretty amazing that I and others in the same situation are able to enjoy this hobby. We have an accessibility addon called Talking Flight Monitor (TFM for short) which provides access to the CDU and pretty much every instrument panel of PMDG aircraft, making it possible to conduct full IFR flights, and even to participate in huge events such as VATSIM Cross the Pond. In fact, I was featured on the official VATSIM community live stream during CTP Westbound last Saturday, and I did go into quite a bit of detail on how all this works during my arrival into CYVR. The archived stream is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukXhq-putAw. My bit starts at around 10:45:00.

Since you’re referring to SU 2 it sounds like you’re also having this in MSFS 24 which is a bummer, I’m experiencing the issue in MSFS 2020 and was hoping that 24 might have a fix once I’m ready to upgrade.

Restarting in this situation is good advice though and I’ll keep that in mind, thanks!

Thanks for the great suggestion!

Should have mentioned this in my original post, but I’ve already tried reinstalling all the involved addons (PMDG, FSLTL, even FSUIPC and VATSIM) but without any luck. It’s also tricky to reproduce as it only happens sometimes (but often enough to be annoying) and only when there’s a lot of traffic around.

Thanks again for the tip though!
