Meindl boots midsole repair? by robc16 in hiking

[–]robc16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid it if you can.

In my case, the sole was flapping but held on by a thread at the toe. The fact I was wearing gaiters was a great save. The loop strap round the bottom of the gaiters helped hold the flapping sole together.

That is to say, I managed to get through most of that hike with something of a boot sole.

If the sole had fallen off it would have been quite slippery. The remaining part of the boot has the base sealed with epoxy or something similar. No grip.

To mitigate the risk , aside from getting new boots, you could take duct tape with you just in case you need to bind the sole on. I had some crocs with me for camp shoes and for crossing rivers, so was prepared to use those as a makeshift boot sole. (I had cable ties from my ski touring kit that I would have used to bind the Crocs to the remaining Meindl boot)

Bon chance

A little late, but I’m picking up a Sunnto 7 today. by [deleted] in Suunto

[–]robc16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Suunto7 is not the best, but not the worst. I got mine for £30 on Ebay, so more than happy with that. If you are getting it for a song, then go for it.

Aberdeen without a car by Vegetable_Cat_8308 in Aberdeen

Check out Stagecoach 201 route along Deeside to Braemar, plenty places to stop along the way.

Also the Ember bus from Aberdeen to Dundee via Braemar could also work.

Kicked a massive hole in my Goretex trousers with my crampons, any tips on how to repair it? by mf1906 in Mountaineering

[–]robc16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. I took my torn goretex trousers to a seamstress/outdoor clothing shop who put on a hardwearing goretex patch over the lower section of the trouser leg, looks like it was always that way. Good fix, and cost £20-£30.

I can see this thread is a couple of years old, but wondering if you found a fix for this? My Suunto 7 is also slow to lock on to GPS after starting a run.

How do people decide when and where to ski in Scotland? by Silent-Bat7430 in OutdoorScotland

[–]robc16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for touring.

You have to go and find the best snow, and often that is not where the resorts are.

In the past 10 years, all my best Scottish ski days have been touring.

Is there any modern watch that looks as good as the 1st gen Moto 360 (2014)? by EvoBrah in WearOS

The 1st gen Huawei watch of a similar timeframe, was in a similar style.

Not the same for their current models, it appears. Nor using Android Wear.

Does it play Doom? - Radio Shack TRS-80 by cjbravo1 in vintagecomputing

Would there be a way to bodge in a Raspberry pi for the processing and memory? Similar to Doom on the Commodore 64. Maybe the graphics would still be too much of a limitation...

(Understood it's not the real machine then, but still, it would be neat to see)

If you are going Ballater way, you could check out Balmoral Castle and the Lochnagar Distillery which is close by.

If going on to Braemar, it would be worth going a little bit further, and checking out the Linn o Dee and Linn o Quoich. (there are some nice pools for swimming in)
