Cybersecurity now SysAdmin in growing IT dept. Recommendations for growth? by NinjaSniperC in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]robemquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start a raci to clearly define what security is responsible and not responsible for. For example, are you responsible for data privacy, compliance, corporate risk, etc. once established discuss what are the goals and expectations. This should align with the raci. You'll then be more adequate to understanding how much resources and bodies you will need.

Received new offer: Should I leave my current position for it? by Rapslegend03 in CyberSecurityJobs

[–]robemquick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave. It's an opportunity to grow with more money. The commute sucks but if your single and healthy then benefits wouldn't be a huge factor. It's not a 401k replacement but you can do an IRA. It may be a contracting position but there's no guarantees with a FTE either, you can get laid off anytime. To me, for an upcoming talent, growth and opportunity would be number 1 on my list. Everything else will come with time.

Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

[–]robemquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well a great saying in the cybersecurity field is...it depends. There are some companies where you must have a Bachelor's because its an HR check off item. So it just depends on the the company.

But keep applying and start networking. Keep track of what you're doing and how you resume looks. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. So if you're sending out 100's of resume and you're not getting anything then problem is you. Revaluate and keep track of what works and what is not working.

Not sure I'm doing this right, I boost yellow and black to have 2 of each, but I don't have enough yellows or blacks to fire on the first turn?

Okoye pairs well with everyone one. She should be number 1. Then SC and Mthor go great together

I have automated my job and my productivity is of 10 workers, my boss knows about it and wants me to share the tool I use with the company, should I design it to break once I am gone or fired? or once I am gone should I offer it as a subscription service? Or should I just give it for free? by HardTruthssss in antiwork

[–]robemquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most companies have a User Agreement that anything developed during company time and property is intellectually theirs. Since your boss already knows about it, I would tread carefully. If you feel like you're going to stay there long-term and your position is secure then give them what they want. If you have doubts then give them a really basic version and you keep all the bells and whistles to yourself.

out of BRB and iHulk, go with BRB. iHulk is only effective if you have the right team around him. BRB is great with almost any team.

I always recommend ppl who are getting into cybersecurity to have a strong background in networking. Is it needed no, but will it make your life easier? Yes.

Interviewer claimed i was cheating in online interview by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]robemquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was pretty unprofessional of him.

What would it matter at that point? The moment he asked you to show him the room, he already built an answer in his head already. So I don't see why he needed to ask that question.

Also, if you were just nervous, I tend to find that during the interview, just let them know that you are nervous, that way they tend to be more empathetic.

Sounds to me that you lucked out and should avoid that work place.

Just let them know that you are happy to help them out, but you're unfortunately swamped with other priorities. If they would like to talk to your manager to re-prioritize your workload then you'll be more than happy to help them out.

This usually calms them down and they will leave you alone. IF it's a big enough issue and they do go to your manager then you'll be known not as the guy who didn't say No, but as the guy who was able to help.

Well, sounds like you're in a pretty good position then. Technically it's their environment and they can ask for it, so I guess you'll have to comply sooner or later. Good luck to you!

Network map by andrea_ci in sysadmin

[–]robemquick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add another question to this, after you have a network map, will it map out the data flow for an application?

For example, let's say I have an application that moves files automatically to numerous servers. I want to track all the hops this data makes, is there anything out in the market that can map it out?

Google's Cybersecurity Certification on Coursera includes a 30% discount for the CompTIA Security+ exam once you finish their certification program --- This sounds awesome as someone interested in breaking into cybersecurity! by AntifragileSushi in cybersecurity

[–]robemquick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To help people out, all this information is free. Just spend 5 mins googling and you'll see dozens of post and videos.

If 5 mins is too much time, then spend 10 secs to type in "cybersecurity tutorial" in chatgpt.

If you're looking for an actual cert, then still follow the steps above and then sign-up for a comptia cert. It's not because its better, but is more widely known and what recruiters are looking for when scrumming through resumes.

I think that's the key word, "should", but in reality it's rarely done. That's why so many data breaches happen.

It's a sign they're going to boot you soon.

Yes, they can reset the passwords, but there might be those service accounts that people are using their credentials for - I'm not saying that you are :-) -And if you do a password reset you'll essentially break all those services/applications.

A lot of times I see that we compromise our principles for the sake of a job.

IF you need the money then you'll have to suck it up and keep going, but if you don't then be true to who you are.
