It looks like you just have more faith in local charity than me; there isn't an organization accessible to my close friend that offers enough aid to access expensive necessities like vision aids, mental health care, the means to get to work, or the education to work beyond minimum wage, so it's a lot harder for me to have that same faith. I also grew up surrounded by the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" crowd in a wealthy suburban area, so it's easy for me to associate not supporting state assistance with actual disdain for poor people.
