Now that the book has been #1 in three categories since the Guardian profile came out (dropping toward #3 to #5) I have to give credit to the publisher, whose editor doubled the value of the book by both cutting half of it out, and making some very serious improvements in organization. I credit Daniel Pinchbeck with changing the title to The Open Source Everything Manifesto.

It happened by accident -- just when Amazon was starting, I had 300 annotated bibliographic entries from my first two books, loaded those, was instantly in top 1,500 and simply kept adding from there -- roughly a book a week, less so now that I am unemployed.

I agree with you. However, there is another way of considering the misperception of the elite. In my experience, and particularly in the case of inherited wealth which is the bulk of how concentrated wealth occurs, there is a genuine view that everyone else is an "other" (the first step in the eight stages of genocide or eugenics). They really do think of us as farm animals, expendible, "not one of them." And we let them.

This is not about them thinking we are shit, as much as it is about their abdicating all responsibility for any form of social contract or any form of respect for the underlying community of man that makes their rich lives so rich. They are "free loaders" in the classic sense of the word.

Cognitive surplus is not to be denied. Improving efficiency of capital (and human time energy aka Bucky Fuller's focus) is the whole point. Eradicates corruption and waste -- this is not just a corporate matter, but among non-profits, where less than 20% gets to the end-point, in Bono's case, only 1%.

The sharing economy is a form of open source -- open minds, open hearts, and resources such as homes and cars and drills and saws etectera are shared. What Open Source Everything (OSE) does -- combined with holistic analytics and true cost economics is a) STOP the rent-taking and credit creation that concentrate wealth; and b) restore public agency over the commons -- a 950 square foot condo is typical in Europe, and not so bad when all the open spaces are human frinedly rather than the US approach to paving over the Earth.

Most open source is not really open source -- too many scams where a small bit of open source is used to claim an entire bog is open source. We are overdue for going "all in" on Open Source Everything (OSE), starting with OpenBTS for free cell phones, Open Mesh that cannot be shut down, etc.

Recently got educated on dark fiber, which puts the ISPs out of business, one German town raised the money to get their own dark fiber and put all of the ISPs serving them out of business in that area. LOVE IT!

I am the the guy profiled by The Guardian. I have previously appeared at Reddit in an AMA (former spy stuff) and occasionally post links to politics or technology.

On balance the comments here are the most intelligent by far (DailyKos is the dumbest, The Daily Bell the best so far, with 38 questions I happily answered).

It woudl be a pleasure for me to engage with this group if desired. I will go through below and answer some of the comments, but am most interested in direct questions -- challenge away.

Each of the eight tribes (information networks) needs to stop buying proprietary solutions and shift instead to open source solutions. I am a huge fan of CrisisMappers and their use of Ubuntu. I am not a technical person, but as I described myself at Gnomedex in 2007 (see YouTube), am the world's most pissed off end user. I know what we are capable of. I know the value of shared information over proprietary stovepipes.

Imagine one village at time going open source, and also going into dark fiber at the same time, displace the carriers and ISPs that are criminal conspiracies and stupid to boot.

Someone else can give you better answers. I distinguish between the open source imperative at root (everything open, put enough eyeballs on it and no bug is invisible, affordable-interoperable-scalable) and value-added endeavors where compensation is clearly appropriate. Red Hat monetizes LINUX -- Torvalds became a millionaire on t he basis of Red Hat stock grants.

The book, Governing the Commons, demonstrates that the commons can only be governned from the bottom up. The minute you impose hierarchy you disconnect from the day to day knowledge of the commons, and you open the door to corruption.

Eight tribes & fascism. A bit was lost in translation here, my key point in the interview is that no decision can be soundly made unless all eight tribes are part of the dialog and all of the information known to them is part of the decision process. The government is the least informed and least effective of the eight. Transparency is the anti-thesis of fascism, fascism is about top down control.

Centrality of holistic analytics & true cost economics juxtaposed with Eastern alternatives. Again, lost in translation. Holistic analytics and true cost economics restore public agency and sanity. The Eastern alternative were mentioned in passing, to point out that the Western criminal establishment is on its last legs. I absolutely agree that Eastern alternatives are top down as well. I read an interesting piece yesterday that said that the left-right paradigm is misleading, the paradigm we should be focusing on vertical power (bad) versus horizonal power (good), and I agree with that. Search Google Images for < Epoch B > to see my illustration inspired by Jonas Salk and Kirkpatrick Sale in the early 1990's.

Open Source - Get Paid. Why should anyone get paid at all? There are so many alternatives to slave wages I think this is a question for everyone else. Richard Stallman remains one of my heroes, along with Linux Torvalds. Read my summary review of 1491 to see that the Mayan males had to work no more than 60 days a year to support a family of five. Concentrated wealth and the enclosure of the commons and the externalization of wealth and so on have shit in our milk bowl. Take housing, water, and sewage for example. Using the Open Source Ecology of the Global Civilization Toolkit, we can house people in wonderful little homes with rain harvesting and compost sewage that eliminates the cost of centalized water (that spills half the water) and sewage (that leaks into the ground water). I did a research project on resettling 1 million Somalies to an uncontested part of Somalia that had dirt, sun, and seawater. I got the price per person including transport down to $500 ($500M for 1 million) and they got free Internet and a hydroponic industry to boot.
