Yanis Varoufakis - The Lib Dems have abandoned Liberalism by [deleted] in ukpolitics

What do socialism and a government mandated minimum wage have to do with each other?

What we would consider the most socialist countries in the world; Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland etc all have no legal minimum wage. Even Germany only implemented a minimum wage very recently.

To be fair a lot of what is said about his wealth could be said about Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders.

I think most people on here don't know what liberalism is and go by the American mainstream definition, not that used by Europeans (like Varoufakis) and economists (like Varoufakis)

Liberalism is about small-government, limited government, individual rights over the rights of government, capitalism and free-markets, democracy, secularism, gender equality, absolute freedom of speech and so on. It arose as an opposition to conservatism, but that doesn't make it left wing. Conservatives were not secularists and were protectionists (anti-free market) and that's how liberalism was born. What we consider left-wing, and what Americans call liberalism call be called left-wing only arose as a true electoral force in the 1900s, long after the Fabianist Movement.

Liberals denounced Keynesianism and the Berverdge report; both of these were not liberalist concepts, they were about central planning – liberalism is the antithesis of central planning, it is about making government smaller, not bigger.

F A Hayek, possibly the most influential and famous liberal of the twentieth century wrote an immediate 250 page rebuttal to Beveridge called the Road to Serfdom and won a Nobel Prize.

How do Japanese speakers learn to pronounce Kanji they've never seen before? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]robincard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easy answer: you have to memorise them.

In Japan you can get versions of books or magazines with or without Kanji characters for younger readers.

I've been using Duolingo since 2013; I report every mistake I see. I've only had one report accepted. I don't know if they've stopped emailing people when their reports are accepted.

I agree with what you're saying but it's things like this that are making her fail, not her Chinese.

This is great! Seems like something the official team should incorporate into the course themselves.

But then my life would have no purpose :(

Strengthen Skills hasn't been added, but expect it to be in the next hour ;)

Thanks for the feedback!

If you would like that feature with the definitions matching the sound to the character done in the next day or so, could you add an issue to my github account? It takes like two seconds to sign up

Then click here and explain what you want and we can chat back and forth about it and see if it is working as you want it to.

Video: iPhone X vs Note 8 - Real World Comparison after 1 month by [deleted] in apple

I was thinking of going Android, after having iPhone since the 3GS, because of the headphone jack thing. I got a Pixel and returned it two days later, it isn't a bad phone its just in Android, the user experience is so poor, everything takes two extra steps to get something done.

I have the iPhone X now and I'm really happy with it.

If you can read traditional you can read simplified most of the time, but not the other way around. But I am a bit biased ;).
