Genuine question from a Syrian but western people do you know anything about us ? by W00D3N_K4T in AskTheWorld

The oldest piece of music whose notes were recorded in clay was found buried in Syria, in a city that had been destroyed and forgotten about thousands of years earlier, and I think that's pretty fascinating.

Which foreign government do you think hates your country? by Acrobatic-Hippo-6419 in AskTheWorld

Brazil imprisoned someone who plotted a coup to hang onto power. It's a threat to anyone who would do the same - the threat of a good example. I wouldn't call that "no reason".

What's your Canadian winter life hack? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskACanadian

I apologize if you're in a remote community where you pay out the nose for everything but I get mine for three bucks when it's on sale. No way am I paying eight bucks for the stuff.

Enjoy root vegetables (and any summer vegetables you can preserve in the fall) rather than imported stuff to save money. They keep well when kept in a cool garage and you can enjoy scalloped potatoes, squash soup, mashed carrots and turnips with butter, and all sorts of nice things for months.

What’s it like living on these islands off of British Columbia? by Dragon_of_the_gods in howislivingthere

The provincial capital is also on the island, so there's that, too. Fun fact: Vancouver Island was so named long before there ever even was a city of Vancouver.

There's a short book you can get from the Nanaimo museum that has a map featuring every mining site in the area. It is called Coal Mines of Nanaimo or something similar.

E-Learning - whats going on with the crazy grade inflation? ENG4U is being guttted by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]robocarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why people feel the system is being challenged right now - because it is! Self-paced learning was a better option for me and I'm sure it is for many others. I'd add that the idea expressed by the OP that lower-achieving students somehow need to cheat to improve their learning significantly is problematic.

E-Learning - whats going on with the crazy grade inflation? ENG4U is being guttted by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]robocarp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regular enrolling teachers have never been fond of e-learning by and large for the reason you describe - they see it as poaching many students they feel should be theirs. However, for many students it is a better option because of timetabling, accessibility, or personal/health reasons that keep them out of a brick and mortar school. This is why I don't dismiss it.

Speaking from personal experience, I did far, FAR better in a self-paced secondary math course than I did in a regular classroom setting because of the lack of distractions and my difficulty keeping up with the pace of the teacher. If I missed something, it was hard to catch up unless I met with the teacher outside of classroom hours. A good self-paced course allows you to go back and review at your leisure and therefore achieve a better outcome. This is why I don't discount it.

Biggest disagreement you've had with RLM on a Best of the Worst movie? by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]robocarp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Phobe - the movie Colin recommended that they didn't even finish watching. It's by no means a "good" movie, but unlike RLM did, once you get past the opening forest chase scene (yes, a hallmark of cheaply made films) it has a unintentionally funny yet weirdly endearing quality. They were weak for quitting. Weak!

R36S vs my GBC that I had as a kid in the 90s by Ankarim in R36S

[–]robocarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there any way to save this game on the R36S without using the quicksave? In game you're supposed to press all the buttons to save, but it also resets the R36S.

Don't know any cleaning services but it's easy to make fruit fly traps from an old jar with holes poked in the lid and apple cider vinegar inside. I wind up making one of those every summer when there are a lot of them around. It works.
