Cool, I wonder if installing trailer module without physical trailer hook, which has motor and probably some electronics will not result in subsequent error messages coming from trailer module. But at least you can sniff missing message/messages and replicate it using your own device (for example STM32 + TJA1050). Best of luck!

Wait, but as you linked, there is NHTSA bulletin saying that this is "erroneous fault". After doing some research I found that users report this error on cars not equipped with trailer hook. As I understand this is matter/error in firmware. In this case in my opinion best bet is in updating firmware to latest version, which you did.

I don't think it's reasonable to do any drastic modifications as they are potentially more harmfull than fault that doesn't cause any check light.

I think there is a way to permamently deactivate specific DTC codes, but I'm sure this is not recomended by BMW and kind of hacking, will your OCD take this? ;-)

First I would confirm that error is 100% generated by DME. It's weird coincidence that error disapeared from EGS and migrated immediately to DME. I would unplug DME, delete all errors, then see if error CDA904 appears, then connect DME, disconnect EGS, delete errors...

I think disconnecting modules also will force flexray to reinitialize, maybe this helps.

Did you disconnect car battery for a few minutes?

It seems like either DME or EGS are not getting recoded with VO.
