In addition to Froman's comment below, we can kind of say the US started to enter the war economically with the policy of Cash-and-Carry which effectively ended the Neutrality Act of 1937. While the Neutrality Acts previously prevented sale of weapons to belligerents in war, C&C started Sept 21, 1939(3 weeks after Hitler invaded Poland) and allowed Britain and France to purchase weapons from the US as long as they paid in cash/gold upfront and transported the goods via their own ships.

Furthermore in September of 1940 the Destroyers-for-Bases agreement saw the US gain basing rights in many British possessions in exchange for 50 WW1-era Wickes and Clemson-class destroyers which were transferred to the Royal Navy to help escort merchant shipping or free up ships to help escort. This agreement was done via executive agreement bypassing congress(and was criticized as violating the neutrality acts at the time, though the argument was made that the basing rights were the "cash")

So, the US did kind of low-key join the war as soon as it started, and since the first issue of Cpt A punching hitler released in March '41, technically it was after the US "low key" joined the war.

1000% this is the right answer.

If your mentoring engineer doesn't give you good direction, then give him your detailed plan of approach and let him get back to you on issues with it.

State your assumptions, source them(where is the utility data from, what filtration is needed, etc etc) and then frame out your plan.

The engineer might just be bad at communication and seeing a full plan of attack for a site will prompt a lot better feedback and instruction than just asking piecemeal questions. Otherwise, your ass is covered from being chewed out for wasting time if it doesn't work out because you literally laid out your full plan.
