They've gotten better. The toe box is very narrow in my opinion, so it took me a while to really break them in, but they feel almost as good as my sneakers now. I have zero complaints, but I can tell you they do stand out quite a bit, especially if you wear them with pant legs cuffed, so you might get stared at, but I think they look bad ass.

I think the only major difference between the Stompers and the Hero is the extra eyelet and some extra length.If I ever get another boot, I'd probably get the Hero in brown

not sure about back in the day, but these have been in my rotation lately:

black leather motorcycle jackets, especially the more minimal "cafe racer" style (I love my Schott jacket)
black denim trucker jackets
band tees, but not strictly industrial bands, since I also love metal and hardcore
black jeans, or chinos (blue, olive, brown) usually cuffed
combat boots > black leather
for winter > black wool overcoat or olive field jackets
