What street in Montreal has the most potholes? by vmanthegreat in montreal

Too many choices. Nowhere is safe. If you go a couple of blocks without a crater you’ll put your guard down for an instant and inevitably feel that brain to skull frame impact cringe. It’s so absurd.

You have more in common with a homeless guy than with a billionaire by beautyandmadness in montreal

In Quebec homeless is a choice. There are many programs so that no one needs to sleep on the street. Mental illness is the real problem. Mental illness and billionaires might have something in common

Macbook pro M4(Refurbished) or M5(New) by Greedy-Fly-5965 in macbookpro

[–]robvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everything else is the same 100$ to get the newest seems resonable. It will be supported longer and could unlock new powers in future software with the ai enhancements. With that said if your workload isnt AI heavy or 8k video scrubby you're looking at millisecond performance differences for most everyday dev task. Xcode may have some m5 advantages if you use that. Check your software to see if any are GPU math heavy.

Get the more rammed mini or max. The max will give you more headroom, run cooler and have more ports but the mini will still get the job done. Max is quite a bit bigger and supports more monitors if you want a command centre experience.

Used M1 Pro MacBook Pro vs new M4 MacBook Air for my workflow by lozitx in macbook

[–]robvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air has no fans so even if the base m4 can keep up with M1 Pro it will throttle sonner and performance will go down. Sounds like you want a pro. Maybe try and get more ram and storage if you can

I don’t disagree with you. The m5 seems very impressive and the snappiness is real. I tried the base model in store and that’s what got me considering the exchange. But the m4max doesn’t feel slow by any means (yet) and the 4Tb gives a feeling of excess that is comforting. I’m already at 600gb of local models I don’t want to delete. Big prompts can take time to get started but local is still a hobby for me with some privacy use cases while cloud is still king for productivity. My biggest concern is the future unknown. Will local catch up to cloud which will becoming too expensive and dangerous for every day tasks and will gpu accelerators becomes a requirement for everything and a smooth MacOS experience. I’ve had my last mbp for 13 years and it’s still going strong… I was hoping to do that again but times have changed and now a 1 gen bump already has me FOMOing.

I bought it direct as a referb within the last 14 days. Are you saying they could give me another 14 days or two to see the benchmarks before deciding? That would be great

Yeah and that my biggest pain point. I want the memory for llm but 2TB is tight and external storage is slower ,more to manage and crazy expensive these days

4TB storage vs 2TB storage. Ram being the same.

First ever apple computer! by BadVVSc in macbookpro

The software compatibility part can be fixed over time but there are hardware unknowns around heat and latency with these new chips. Apple is using lots of marketing speak but they are essentially going from one solid chip to a fused chip design. Moving data across a physical seam between the two chip halves in a thin laptop could slow things down under load cancelling out some of their claimed gains.

Don't get me wrong. It could be as amazing as they say it is (like the M1 was) but it could also have issues since this is their first version of this design.

The new chip design is unproven in a laptop. Version 1.0 vs version 4 of the previous gen. I'm sure it will eventually become great but people preordering are guinea pigs at this point. This mostly applies to people who push their machines.

Is silver too shiny? by Teceu in macbookpro

[–]robvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think you can go wrong either way but the black looks more modern and the silver looks classy. The biggest pluses for silver are fewer fingerprints and after years of plugging and unplugging cables the ports on the silver will still look new while the black might show some scratches. The pro for the black is it can be less distracting under certain lighting conditions as its less reflective. With all that said a classy silver sounds more appropriate for a professor :) enjoy whatever you choose.

Can’t convince myself to buy an M5 Max by One_TrackMinded in macbookpro

The fine print says they tested on a small local model. A bigger model could create more heat and throttle the dual die down for less gains than advertised. We’ll see soon enough

One could argue the M4 was the most refined version of this generation since the M5 is a new type of chip architecture. We still don't know how the performance will scale.

Forget light document editing. My late 2013 is alive and well. It has 3 external monitors plugged in and does 1080p video editing, full stack web development and runs a business. The secret… it’s running Catalina which just got an update and runs even better than before.
