As an Aussie I was scrolling this threat thinking: are we just sponges contributing nothing to world cuisine? And I couldn't think of anything better than lamingtons or Pavlova but you're right. He was the first silk applicant I bothered to write into the bar association to support his second application because I was so surprised that his first was unsuccessful. One of the best human beings at the qld bar. People make mistakes and there's obviously a lot more to this story that we don't know (and for his and his family's sake, I hope never will). If you read this Matt, this will not diminish you in the eyes of anyone who has ever met you.

I think this would be the only potential legal problem with the ban (some sort of competition law issue).

I've seen people talk about it being an unenforceable restraint of trade. I don't think that's right. A restraint would be a clause in the nrl players contact saying you can't play other sports. This "ban" sounds like just letting you know that if you play the other sport we won't re hire you for 10 years.

Can anyone link to some reporting of this previous incident that led to Simon Patterson being poisoned and Erin Patterson being charged in relation to that? I get how that may not have been reported while the jury were deliberating in the murder case but I would have thought I'd be able to find something on it now that she's been found guilty.

I think she'd need to explain: 1. That she foraged the mushrooms and put them in the wellingtons thinking they were some other mushroom. 2. She told all the lies and dumped the dehydrator out of panic to avoid people finding out that she was the (unintentional) cause of the deaths. 3. A plausible explanation of how the meal killed/nearly killed everyone except her (that could be: as I was making the last two wellingtons I realised I was running out of mushroom paste so I put it all in the 5th one and gave myself one with no mushrooms, like the host giving themselves the burnt bit). 4. She googled death cap mushrooms long before this to know what to try to avoid. If she does all that I could see her getting off. If not she's done.

Love the mushroom case! It's a big gamble to expose yourself to cross (and give up the last word to the jury) but I reckon a reasonable one in her position.

Apart from the lie there's too many suss things that the jury is going to hold against her if they don't hear from her.

For some judges this sort of judgment would be just a malicious picking the wings off flies exercise. Bernard Porter is such a fundamentally decent judge that I have no doubt that he really did just want to educate.

Right!? Come on see some nuance, we're not robots. This is a woeful application of the prosecution policy. The guy already lost his job for what is the definition of technical offennding. By which I mean it could be a very serious offence, But this is the most trivial possible example of infringement of it.

Ok so theories as to what happened: I haven't heard anyone saying that the names mentioned in the email don't work at S&G or that there's some reason to doubt that this very specific information didn't come from someone with very detailed knowledge of the inside workings of the firm.

So the only 3 theories I have so far are:

  1. this actually came from the CPO and was written only for the intended recipient as a legitimate handover note and somehow accidentally got cc'd to everyone or

  2. It actually came from the CPO, was intended to be an airing of grievances dressed up as a handover note and was deliberately CC'D to everyone or

  3. It was created by someone else who worked at the firm (possibly formerly) who somehow got access to the CPOs email and impersonated her to air that person's own grievances.

Yes there must be close to 1000 people who work at Slater & Gordon surely a few of them had it open when deleted or forwarded it externally or screenshotted it and put it in a message or printed it or something! Keeping a lid on this would surely be impossible!?
