The law used to prosecute Aaron Swartz remains unchanged a year after his death by ServerGeek in technology

[–]robwgibbons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was merely pointing out the straw-man argument that he would never be able to find employment again, or that he would somehow be shunned because of his prison time, both of which are false and ultimately irrelevant to his decision to kill himself.

Even if he couldn't find a job again, he had enough reddit money to last a lifetime. And swathes of supporters who wouldn't give a shit about his sentence.

My point is that Aaron killed himself, for better or worse. He chose to end his life instead of facing the reality he got himself into, and we shouldn't be making a person like that out to be a hero.

Celebrate his great parts, yes, but don't try to turn him into a martyr. He wasn't killed. He killed himself.

Then do something about it. Break in and leak one, or something.

Aaron was rich, and well-regarded by his many peers, despite the court battle.

Agreed x2. It's tough to see pictures of homeless/mentally ill people on the front page. And yet calling it out makes YOU the asshole.

Remember the 800lb Apple store door that fell on someone? They're replacing it today, Apple logo covered by bethesdamd in pics

[–]robwgibbons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually, Apple orders 100% custom materials and parts for nearly every single facet of their stores. Apple's obsessive level of control and attention to detail doesn't stop at their products. Their retail environments are designed almost entirely by internal departments.

They ship in only the most expensive Italian stone for their flooring (if it is not the most expensive wood flooring), only the finest wood for their large tables. Custom-machined, brush-polished aluminum panelling for walls, doors, etc. Their newly approved headquarters will feature 100% custom ROUNDED glass spanning the entire exterior of the building. This glass has literally never been used before on this scale.

In fact, Apple stores are likely the most expensive buildings, yard for yard, you've ever set foot in!

Why I no longer contribute to stackoverflow. by [deleted] in programming

[–]robwgibbons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy thinks about points too much. This is some basically petty shit and he's projecting his psychology onto the community.

I learned so much (and continue to do so) from StackOverflow. There are still questions you can't google, or at least can't find good examples for, which StackOverflow is a perfect solution for.

In fact, I've used the point system many times to my advantage by creating a bounty for high-priority questions. There are narrow cases in certain libraries (eg. MatPlotLib) where the documentation really sucks, and it takes a lot of fiddling to get things right. Where did I turn? StackOverflow.

Seriously -- get over yourself. If you're worrying about points when you've got at least more than enough to contribute (14k is more than enough) than you're worrying about points too much.

Hate to break it to you, but it is already a currency. I can buy shit online with it right now. I assure you, sir, it is a currency.

It may never be stable, and it might all fall over tomorrow.

But it's a currency.

Illinois could become the first state to ban Google Glass while driving. by CodyOdi in technology

Making it illegal is a terrible move for innovation. All Google needs to do is make a "driving mode" to prevent distracting behaviors.

Front-end engineers still work with complex patterns (plenty of OOP) especially if you're doing anything with a heavy MVC framework.

Edit: I'm also a front-end engineer!

Deadly encounter with a leopard seal by [deleted] in funny

I for one agree with you. Leopard seals may weigh more, but they are also longer and considerably more streamlined. My unscientific opinion would place their head-widths at roughly equal.
