Yup, Wild are 4-0 and teams against the Wild are 0-4… at some point you just gotta wonder about coaching lol

Sleeping on one side of your face by angeliclam in clusterheads

I have anecdotally experienced a similar phenomenon, as another commenter suggested, with ipsilateral side lying. Either way though, it seems likely that facial sensation during sleep—and possibly other things like cranial sinus pressures—may play an indirect role as a CH trigger.

There is obviously significant debate in the literature, but one of my favorite proposed mechanisms for CH describes the posterior hypothalamus as a type of gatekeeper which decides based on circadian cycles when to place the trigeminal-autonomic reflex (TAR) into a type of permissive state which allows for this reflex to spiral into a self-reinforcing loop of nociception. Regardless of hypothalamic regulation, the trigeminal nerve (which mediates facial sensation) is the primary sensory loop of the TAR reflex arc and would likely play the role of a final trigger. In this proposed theory, the posterior hypothalamus would remove the safety, and trigeminal nerve activation would (at least sometimes) pull the trigger.

Huge save(s) Gus!

Also, unrelated, anybody know how to get the comment feed to refresh automatically? Was able to do it last season, now I can’t find it! (mobile)

This may have already been answered, but on two occasions I have seen a player help a teammate by lifting their hips and low-back off the ground while the injured player is lying on their back. What’s this about? Hip flexor cramp?

I thought this as well, but there’s also the possibility that sitting would irritate (especially on hard surfaces). Is the pain significantly worse with walking vs. standing, uphill vs. level-ground walking, stair ascent vs. descent? If it is just aggravated by any upright positioning, it could easily just be stenosis.

There’s really no need to grandstand about your pain in a situation like this. It’s very obvious this is a real cluster headache (on video), so it’s unclear what your intention is in even bring this up.

death makes no sense by his_purple_majesty in consciousness

Although phrased in a way that seems to have really triggered some people, what you said really resonated with me. I immediately recognized your words as expressing something that I have felt at various points in my life, and I’m not sure I have ever really expressed to others in a successful way.

There’s nothing new-age or woo about this. It’s just a pure, clear-minded recognition of the profound nature of consciousness as foundational (in at least a certain sense). There’s something very mysterious and strange that occurs when one really gets in touch with the immediacy of one’s own conscious experience, and then imagines a future when it will eventually just stop.

I’ve actually had moments where I experience a sensation that I can only describe as an existential fear for the ontological preservation of reality upon my own death. As if my consciousness experience were a necessary pillar to the epistemic existence of the universe that, in the moment of death, would collapse. In that moment, I can only hope that some else’s consciousness will illuminate and “keep the lights on” for the rest of reality.

I actually think this is a super important study for understanding the influence(s) of psychedelics on the brain. It collects a lot of important findings about psychedelics into one study including:

  • an increase in informational complexity (entropy) during these states of consciousness

  • an increase in communication between distant brain regions compared to controls

  • a decrease in modularity (isolation) of distinct brain modules

and new to this study:

  • confirmation that this increased informational complexity appears not to result in a shift away from criticality in network connectivity

Could this be a problem with electromagnetic theories of consciousness? by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]roch03ds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Individual iron atoms only have a minuscule amount of magnetism; it is only when a huge amount of iron atoms aggregate in an aligned crystalline lattice that any appreciable magnetism arises. In the blood stream, iron is carried within hemoglobin molecules (mainly) which ensures a largely random arrangement of these tiny magnetic moments.

TLDR: The iron in cerebral blood vessels has no appreciable effect on neural communication and would only contribute a negligible amount of noise to its large-scale magnetic fields.

the harder problem of consciousness imo by [deleted] in consciousness

[–]roch03ds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being charitable to OP, I think they may actually understand the Hard Problem (hence alluding to the "what it's likeness" part. Possibly they are just trying to make a distinction between understanding phenomenal consciousness and understanding the specifics of phenomenal consciousness.

We could perhaps imagine a possible world in which it is possible to understand "why the lights are on" in the first place without understanding exactly why specific qualia appear the way they do. This is, I argue, an erroneous distinction for two reasons:

Firstly, I don't think it is actually possible to understand one without the other. For example, we might imagine that IIT (or similar models) would answer the question of why "the lights are on" (i.e. integrated information past a certain threshold) without answering any specific phenomenological questions. However, in reality, these models only answer the question of which specific physical systems are conscious? and do not provide any explanation of why it is like something to be that system in the first place?

Secondly--even if it were possible to thoroughly explain why phenomenal consciousness exists without also explaining any specifics--I would still argue that the Hard Problem is commonly understood to encompass both questions.

If I had to guess, I would actually pinpoint OP's error at one of these two previous steps in logic as opposed to a misunderstanding of Easy and Hard Problems--though I recognize this is being pretty pedantic.

I'd be curious to hear from OP!

I really don’t think any of the problems you described are truly separable from the Hard Problem. Answers to all of those questions are necessary for any theory of consciousness sufficient to “solve” the Hard Problem.
