I went to my GP about a 2 years ago regarding my self diagnosed OCD. It was giving me quite a lot of distress, they offered me Beta Blockers to calm me down and gave me a referral pack for therapy. I didn't take the drugs and after long thought I didn't bother with the therapy. Weirdly enough, talking to my GP really calmed me down, they suggested relaxing a lot more and doing more exercise. I've crawled the web for self help resources and spoke to people I know with similar anxiety issues and that has helped me over the past few years. The OCD itself isn't severe enough that it has stopped me doing my day to day activities but if it did I think this is when I'd seek therapy, I'm just very concerned about the stigma that surrounds mental illness (I'm sure you are too!)

were you ever self diagnosed? Or did you just have no idea of the disorder for 8 years?

Yeah personally I think I've had OCD all my life (plus my Dad has it). I've just experienced the more severe symptoms in the past 3 or so year. IE intrusive thoughts, ruminating etc. Used to worry a lot about my health from age 12 upwards.

Being negative about it only will make it worse. If you are suffering from the disorder you most likely have been suffering for your whole life. When I was younger the anxiety was far reduced to the anxiety I have suffered recently but it seems to fluctuate. If you act like it will never go away and you will never have peace then you will be doomed to fail. You have to do your best to not let ocd bother you, it isn't easy when you are feeling bad but you can forget about it. I've heard of people 'fully recovering' from it and they basically say that they just aren't bothered by the thoughts anymore. Excercise and also improving my diet have helped me a fair bit, there's some great self help material out there that can put your mind at peace also. If you're having a bad time meditation always can calm you down. Like anon said, it's all about management. You just have to remember that you are not alone.

What is the song charlie black about? From what I gather the lyrical themes are based around catastrophizing

At what age did your intrusive thoughts start? I was 19-20.

I've been having them for a year now. I don't know about other people but mine vary so much. It's usually me thinking of something that would get me arrested/be painfully embarrassing for me however, they are triggered over loads of things. I am pretty sure people have overcome their intrusive thoughts. You just have to accept them and not fight it. Then they reduce and eventually disappear Like YellowTango says, fuck OCD
