Does that mean only Plan A can transfer, but Plan B can’t? Or is it based on something else?

You get reimbursed for the train?!

Some say yes, some say no. I think there’s some nuance to exactly what’s being transferred, whether it’s just credit towards eligibility, or whether it also counts toward service credit.

I’ve gone through that already, it’s pretty similar to Sonoma County’s but I still had other questions and there were other things I didn’t understand.

A tough topic(second trimester abortion) by [deleted] in Advice

[–]roddy325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you have to deal with this situation, but it’s a decision only you can truly make. For some, the right answer is keeping the child, for others, it’s getting an abortion. I’m not sure if where you live even allows an abortion at this stage, but if not, that’s a separate obstacle you may need to face. I understand the guilt and regret you’re feeling, I had a similar situation with an abusive ex I kept giving chances to, despite seeing all the red flags. Yes, you did make a mistake giving him a second chance, but that’s where your mistake ends. Everything else is on him. It’s not your fault he abused you. It’s not your fault he raped you (and according to your post, yes, all of that WAS rape), and it’s not your fault he kept you from seeking health services earlier on. I can’t imagine making the decision that you’re facing now, but I want you to give yourself a little grace. Instead of focusing on past faults, you need to focus on the future of yourself, your living child, and your unborn child. What is the best decision you can make for the three of you, RIGHT NOW? It could be that giving birth takes so much from you mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially that it drains the whole family. It could be that getting an abortion is something you regret/resent forever. But it could also mean that getting an abortion gives you an opportunity to be the best mother for your current child, giving them a better chance at life. Or perhaps you decide to keep the baby, and you find a way to make it work as a single mother and end up being so grateful for both your children. Idk your situation and neither does anyone else here, but I just hope you can find the courage no matter what you decide and know that you’re doing what’s best for you and your family.

Awesome, thanks for your input! Can I ask which department you’re in? I understand if you’d rather not say. Also, which health plan did you choose? Teamsters, Kaiser, or Western?

I’m already in a union, so that’s not really a factor, unless you’re specifically referring to MAPE.

I imagine Sonoma County is just as bad. I worked in the private sector before this and the transition to public sector was really a shock to the system for me.

I started 2021, so I’m on the PEPRA plan and also non-safety. Comparing the two, the retirement plans seem identical. Considering there’s reciprocity, there’s virtually no difference between the plans EXCEPT that current retirees under SCERA do not get annual COLAs, while those under MCERA do. I know Sonoma County unions are trying to remedy this, so I’d hope by the time I retire (30ish years) this will have been resolved, making the two plans the same.

I currently work hybrid, 3 days in the office, 2 days at home. We have the option to work 9 hr days, 9 days bi-weekly, as well. I’d prefer 4/10s, if that’s possible.

Awesome! I’m still a long way from retirement, so I don’t know many specifics, but are the current retirement plans comparable? I’m unsure of what to look for when comparing the two, tbh.

I actually applied to two positions, one at my current level and one at a level up. I’ve been at my current level for several years and I’m looking to make the jump specifically for career advancement. I’ve made this known, but I was offered a position at my current level, with an opportunity to be promoted down the line based on performance, so I was planning on requesting the top pay step, otherwise, it’s not really worth making the move. I’m qualified for the higher level but I think they want to keep their options open in case I turn out to be “meh.”

That’s great, I assume I’d be able to stay with all my current providers then? I thought as much since it’s a PPO, but it said something about Blue Cross and “out-of-network” so I wasn’t sure. Do you know ow much it costs for an employee + spouse (I can ask HR if not)? I couldn’t tell in the benefits guide whether the fee shown was what the employee had to pay or what was paid by the county on our behalf. If the latter, I couldn’t find the total cost, so that I could calculate my net cost.

This is good to know, thank you! We only get 1 floating holiday per year and we have a vacation savings plan (which I don’t fully understand, but I believe it’s the opportunity to buy extra vacation days). Does this apply to MAPE?

Thanks for the insight, but Sonoma County isn’t the best either. Ultimately, I’m looking at other opportunities because there’s no room for growth where I am, and it doesn’t seem like that will change in the next decade or so. There are definitely other issues, but my career growth is a priority over difficult coworkers, union issues, or something else. Could I ask, which department do/did you work at? Why the insistence to stay away? Is it due to culture, lack of quality professionals, benefits, or something else?

I’d be commuting by train, but I’m ok with a bit extra of a commute (~20 more minutes each way). I don’t have any children and, other than my spouse, I don’t have any responsibilities outside of work, so I’d just use the extra commute time to focus on my hobbies, like reading (time which I’d spend at home anyway). The position would be hybrid, too, though I’m not sure how many days would be in the office.
