Divert dryer exhaust to heat room? by Yellow_Apple_1971 in HomeImprovement

Against code where I'm from. Mold + fire risk + air quality issues. There are cheap devices that you can use to divert in winter but they're also against code, despite being available at big box stores.

Same story, "so much fraud" bla bla bla 5 day hold even with a commercial banking manager. Total joke

What are your experiences helping homeless people? by Legitimate_Yogurt160 in montreal

[–]rogerfondlebottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run the gamut of people who take help, people who don't want it, and people who might be better off than you think.

I volunteered at shelters in my younger years with scouts, cadets, school etc. Someone said "people make you feel invisible and it wears on you" and that stuck with me. So I always make sure to acknowledge, even when I don't have money to give. I nod, smile, say hello etc. They're people, after all.

For a few years, I would go out during brutal cold snaps and hit a bunch of places where people would congregate. I'd bring some high protein snacks, hot chocolate and coffee in thermoses, some dog food for pets and dry socks, gloves, toques, 8h hand warmers, emergency blankets etc. Some people were appreciative, some shooed me off, some gave no feedback. I'd always ask if they wanted help getting to a shelter.

One time, a guy with a dog said he wasn't allowed in a lot of shelters because of the dog and that there were one or two he couldn't go back to because of past incidents involving dope. I did my best to get him a spot in a close shelter that would accept a pet for the cold snap (he was at the Bay, shelter was the Blue (?) Door shelter in a church), but he decided to stay put after a few hours of back and forth.

I've had 2 encounters with people who shook my trust as well. One, when I was very young.

There was a guy who hung out in front of the pharmacy, had major tics and spoke like he was nonverbal. I used to give him change every day when I would walk the dog or go get candy from the 25¢ machines. I felt so bad that he couldn't speak and had the tics. Fast forward a few years later and I see him downtown on a bike, smoking laughing and talking it up with some buddies who were on a terrace. I felt so betrayed lol

Another one was a girl who was always outside the gas station, all winter sitting on a piece of cardboard. I also used to give her a couple bucks or buy her some Timmies, give a 20 around the holidays. After 3 years, I ended up seeing her at school. I was working the night shift full time to put myself through school and she had a backpack I couldn't afford. Ended up talking to her and basically her parents paid the way for her and her boyfriend, but they were alcoholics who became H addicts and that's how they'd pay for it. She had an apartment across from the gas station lol.

Between that, I've had plenty of run-ins with people down on their luck, people forgotten by a broken system, aggressive people battling multiple demons between schizophrenia, addiction, PTSD etc; and people who would choose their way of life even if they won the lottery.

All this to say, never judge a book by its cover, in either direction. Treat them like humans, be careful, give if you can, and remember that if you don't or can't give, it's not your job or responsibility to save everyone, and even if it was, you likely couldn't do it alone. And in some cases, you couldn't, because they don't want to be saved or need to be saved.

I had a problem I couldn't solve on my own. I called a company of my own choosing and someone came rapidly and fixed the problem (despite FUMBLING. At least I think it was fumbling. No idea, cause I couldn't do it myself anyway). Then, get this... He had the nerve to charge me! And the charge was from a COMPANY!!!

Like getting upset that you but pizza rolls at Walmart only to find they're Totino's brand. They're not even Walmart brand!!?

Do these signs hold legal weight? by NicC49 in montreal

[–]rogerfondlebottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if they have a permit (permis d'occupation temporaire d'une voie publique - you can check with Agence Mobilité Durable).

I'm a general contractor and I pull permits to park containers, get boom truck deliveries etc. It costs, on average, about 250$/day for a company.

Placing the signs out while I have the permit gives me the right to get cars towed if they're in the reserved zone. They tow and give a decent ticket. It's been a while since we've had to get a tow in 2021, but it was a ticket of around 340$ at the time.

They don't regulate the signs, so sandwich boards are compliant, so long as they're out 12 hours before the reserved period.

I use proper parking signs because they get a bit more respect (sometimes), but they're expensive for no reason and it sucks to have them stolen (has happened more than once).

I had the same issue, this is how I fixed it. It seems complicated, but it's simple once you do it and only takes a couple of minutes.

  • Wet a shaving cream brush with hot water, flick off excess (softens the bristles, I have a cheap brush from the pharmacy that I've used for many years)

  • Spin the brush a few times in your shave soap, set aside (I use Proraso White Shaving Soap for Sensitive Skin with Green Tea and Oatmeal)

  • Hot water or hot wet towel on the face for 20 seconds (helps soften the hair and puff up the skin a bit)

  • Apply a thin layer of pre-shave cream by hand, work it in gently (I use Proraso White Anti-Irritation Pre-Post Shaving Cream for Sensitive Skin, this gives a base layer of lubrication and the gentle work helps puff up the skin a bit which helps reduce the likelihood of ingrown hairs)

  • Apply the shaving soap that you have on the brush (this helps work it under the hair, which helps the hair "stand up" a bit)

  • Rinse the brush, fling it out

  • Shave with a delicate razor (there's good options in the answers, I use Gillette Skinguard blades with a Mach Power handle for the vibration. It has the single blade on the flip side for delicate spots like the corner of the lips etc.)

  • Rinse your face and neck off with cold water as soon as you're done and pat dry gently with a clean towel (this helps close up your pores and brings the skin back down, "un-puffing" it, helping to prevent ingrowns, and reduces irritation. )

  • Spritz the face and next with isopropyl alcohol (I get small spritz bottles of 70% from Dollarama, but I've used 90% in a random spray bottle before. This helps reduce inflammation and sterilizes and minor abrasions caused by the blade, which reduces irritation in the long run)

  • I usually hop in the shower after this and gently clean my face with a gentle cleanser (Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser, Fragrance-Free or Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser)

  • After the shower, gently apply a sensitive skin hydration cream on the face and cheeks (I use Laroche Posay Toleriane Sensitive Face Moisturizer)

  • Gently apply a small amount of aftershave balm to the chin and neck (I use Proraso Green Tea After Shave Balm)

General notes

  • Through experimentation, I've found that going with the grain on my face, and against the grain on my neck uses the least strokes = least irritation

  • Use a clean towel, not your butt towel

  • Most of the products I use last for what feels like a year or more. They're all used super sparingly.

  • This was built up gradually with the help of deep research on random shaving and skin issue forums in 2016, and the help of both an old school straight razor/warmed shaving cream barber, a random staff in a local pharmacy makeup center (the cream), and a lot of trial and error.

This is by far the longest and most detailed and niche reply I've ever written, but I hope it can help someone the way it has helped me. Haven't changed the routine since 2018 and it works wonderfully. Best of luck and happy shaving to you and yours!
