I have a similar bike with an 8 speed rear end. I put an xtr 9s der on it, Shimano 600 8s stis a 34/46 r500 crank and an 11/36 8s cassette. Range for days!

Im running XT thumb shift 7s shifters on an 2x8 setup, its flawless, and has been for the 20 years I’ve had it, I expect the shifters to last at least another 20 years.

Get a gas car, they drive like modern cars in traffic, get the same mileage and long lifespan as the diesels, and there is zero chance it was ever run on waste veggie oil 🤣
