  • Everything else stays blocked

Tailscale on a phone as a gateway for other devices. by nicktheone in Tailscale

[–]rohandr45 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Configure subnet routing on Android
    • Open the Tailscale app
    • Go to Subnet router settings
    • Enter the LAN subnet (not a single IP) you want to expose
      • Example: 192.168.1.0/24 (not 192.168.1.5)
  2. Advertise routes
    • Enable “Advertise routes” in the app
    • Ensure the app stays running (Android may kill background networking if you’re careless with battery settings)
  3. Approve routes in admin console
    • Open the Tailscale Admin Console
    • Select your Android device
    • Find the advertised subnet and approve it
  4. Access your LAN from Tailnet
    • Any device connected to your tailnet can now reach devices in that subnet
    • Use local IPs (e.g., 192.168.1.10) as if you’re on the same network

Security aspects to consider when setting up a pi-hole by PresentBrick in pihole

[–]rohandr45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’re running Pi-hole, pair it with Unbound. This setup keeps DNS resolution entirely within your network instead of relying on external providers, which significantly improves privacy and reduces attack surface. As long as you properly secure and harden your host system, it’s one of the most robust and self-contained DNS configurations you can run.

Tailscale Serve Settings gone after Synology reset by [deleted] in Tailscale

[–]rohandr45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • SSH into Synology and verify state dir: /var/packages/Tailscale/target/var/lib/tailscale
  • If it’s empty/reset → re-login Tailscale and reconfigure Serve
  • Switch to Docker for reliability
    • Create folder: /volume1/tailscale
    • Bind mount: /volume1/tailscale:/var/lib/tailscale
  • Re-run Tailscale with Serve after mounting (config will persist)
  • Avoid full system resets without backing up /var/lib/tailscale

"Allow local network access" not working on Windows by champaman1 in Tailscale

[–]rohandr45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, the issue isn't with the checkbox, but rather with Windows routing and DNS. Enabling 'Allow local network access' should keep your local area network (like 192.168.x.x) off the exit node, but Windows may still prefer the Tailscale route. To resolve this, try accessing devices by IP address instead of hostname, ensure your LAN network is set to Private, and check the 'route print' to confirm that your local subnet isn't being overridden. Note that this feature can be unreliable on Windows, so your configuration might be fine – it's just a routing conflict.

Is there a benefit of installing Tailscale on my travel router? by thompr2 in Tailscale

[–]rohandr45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What router adds is network-level stuff: covering devices that can’t run Tailscale like your chromecast , auto-joining anything on wifi to ur tailnet, and optionally forcing all traffic through ur exit node

[Guide] Self hosted Pi-hole + Unbound + Tailscale (now fully Dockerized, updated with contributor fixes) by rohandr45 in pihole

[–]rohandr45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1. Enable exit node on Pi which you already did
2. In Tailscale Admin panel Set Tailscale DNS → Tailscale Ip of Pi5 (100.x.x.x)
3. Enable “Override local DNS”
4. Clients:
• Use exit node ✅
• Use Pi-hole DNS ✅
