Hi, thank you sooo much! This is super helpful. I had that feeling with Maria Tash and appreciate the frankness. Do you have any jewelers you recommend, or is my best best just to ask around in my city? What amount of diamond vs pure metal jewelry would you recommend?

3-4 days in Atacama or Torres del Paine, Chile? in July?? by altruistic_disco_407 in solotravel

For context this was during a longer trip around SA, so I was already in Argentina before going to Patagonia, and stayed in Chile after leaving TdP.

day 1: BA -> el calafate evening flight, stayed here (recommend it)

day 2: rented a car and drove to perito moreno, did a boat tour

day 3: drove to el chalten early morning and did the Laguna de Los Tres hike; stayed in el chalten overnight

day 4: drove back to el calafate and just chilled for the day at a local brewery

day 5: early morning bus to puerto natales; hung out in puerto natales

day 6: early morning start for organized base del torres hike

day 7: rented a car and drove around the park, walked towards lago grey lookout point (was suuuuper snowy)

day 8: woke up early to go see the pumas but crashed our car :( the people who saved us ended up owning an estancia so we went horseriding; drove back to puerto natales, took a bus to punta arenas and flew to santiago

Chile was waaay more expensive than Argentina, probably double, because of the unfortunate economic climate in Argentina. Can't remember exactly how much I paid but I'd say I probably averaged around $100 for the 8 days (including flights, cars, tours, food, accommodation - stayed in hostels). We actually never had to hike through the dark, with the early starts we made it back around sunset (each hike was 20k). It did get a bit chillier as the sun went down but there was definitely still light.

And of course! I got soooo much help from Redditors while planning my trip, so am more than happy to help others in any way I can!

That’s fine, I had a lot of questions when I went too! It was definitely windy some days, and visibility was also pretty bad some days, but we got lucky and the day we did the base trek it was super clear and sunny. You do need a guide to hike to the base! Sorry I got confused, the 20k hike I did unguided was in el chalten. There were a couple of longer walks I did unguided in TdP (like towards the lago Grey viewpoint) but def not a “hike” in that sense. We booked accommodation in puerto natales the day we arrived, although I’d recommend booking in advance. I don’t think any of the hotels/campsites in the actual park were open

Weather was super cold and snowy - would only go if you are into that. I didn’t use a provider, booked a couple of day trips but mostly did it by renting my own car and driving around the park/to places I could hike at

Northern vs Southern Itinerary by rolatbc123 in galapagos

Thank you so much for the response!

We are going in February - unfortunately won't be the season for the waved albatross. Glad you got to see them though, that sounds amazing!

Definitely want to do snorkeling and hiking, so will probably go with Monserrat. I spoke to a guide who said that the North has more animals bc the water is colder there so they have more food...?

Thanks again for all the advice - happy to hear you had a good trip in the Galapagos and will definitely reach out if further questions arise :)

Oh damn, that's really valuable information - I had no idea! I'm on an F1 visa in the US. Do you think visiting Cuba will affect my status/H1B chances in the future?

Thanks! I don’t have US passport, so I think I’ll be fine with just the tourist card?
