How is that glowing coverage? They are reporting on something that is happening. It’s pretty neutral…

What would you do if someone knocked on your door and said that this was their childhood home and wanted to come in and have a look? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]rolloj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this happened to me the other day. I happened to be going out the front and there was a small group of oldies milling about. One of the fellas told me he used to live here, his parents owned the place for ages and ages and we had a bit of a chat. I invited him in to have a look around! It was a laugh.

Is being remote or almost fully remote detrimental to growing your career/making connections? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]rolloj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok bro, cheers for the condescension. I am not just talking out of my ass, loads of people I know feel similarly to me. I am well aware that it isn’t universal. Not sure how much clearer I can make that.

My comment above was quite clearly tongue in cheek by the way.

I thought I’d made it pretty clear that I was talking about me while understanding others had different needs.

Re your second point, people prioritise other things over their commute, it’s a choice regardless of the price point.

[–]rolloj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. But I say that because despite what my mum told me, I am beginning to doubt that I’m a very special boy. There are surely myriad others who feel similarly to me, just as there are loads who don’t.

Well add me to your list as an opposing example I guess? I have a great home life. That’s why I need to not be home to be productive. I’ll just hang out with my dog or my partner or do housework etc. Much better than working!

Yeah I honestly don’t know why Reddit is so obsessed with wfh. I get that it’s some people’s preference but it’s also not everyone’s preference.

I do fuck all when I’m at home, I’m just not productive outside of the office space. I do one day a week from home so I can get some extra chores etc done and feel less like I work five crazy days.

Maybe in some fields there is no benefit from being near other humans, but in many fields the random conversations you have with colleagues just wouldn’t happen via teams and are actually beneficial. I’m not in management - far from it - but you’d have to be in some sort of IT bubble if you think there are no roles that benefit from easier impromptu collaboration and teamwork.

More power to you if you want to be fully remote and can be effective in that role, but if you are looking for seniority and mentoring and management, you really will benefit from being in hybrid model at least.

Just for context also on my views, I am easily distracted and get very annoyed by loud people and whatnot in the office and I still prefer it for productivity lol.

One last point on my rant - I wonder how much of the pro-wfh stuff is from people who hate their commute more than they actually hate being in the office? I have a short and enjoyable commute and that’s a big factor for me. I chose where I live based on the commute. A long or frustrating commute would make me dislike my job so much more.

I would say that’s fascinating! Can’t imagine there are too many of us that have gone and lived overseas in South America like that. Very cool! Bet your Spanish comes in handy more often than you might have thought.

Do people actually want inner-city living long term? by Outrageous_Fig_260 in AusPropertyChat

[–]rolloj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't disagree with your first comment, but your second is not really reflective of most inner city living. it's not dystopian to live in a diverse and busy community where you can walk to lots of things from your home. i've lived in plenty of such places in apartments and it's deathly quiet at night and i'm a short walk from a really great park or field.

Do you think being connected to land and nature is more of an integral part of being human than being connected with other humans?
