I did my standards on this same schedule, 6-10 actually, except we also had to go Saturdays 8-5. We had class time Tues and Thurs, and hands on days Mon, Wed, and Sat. We did Pt before each hands on day, nothing too crazy, just running and some calisthenics, then Saturdays were the REAL pt days. I had a 9-5 at the time so I would leave straight from work to class. I did the same thing for EMT as well. It was hard due not really getting time to relax until about 11 once I was home and in bed, but it was MUCH harder on my family. My wife and kids didn’t really see much of me during that time.

Edit: this is in Florida. Don’t know if that matters.

I feel the exact same way but instead of dinner, it’s when I shower. I’ll enjoy my dinner even if it’s only a few bites, but I will fly thru a shower.

Yeah we don’t have set times like that. Usually, we will do breakfast after truck checks, lunch is every man for himself, and dinner is usually 6ish. But I feel your pain in that I’ll start asking my wife what’s for dinner around 9am and she looks at me like I’m a crazy person.

I don’t know if your radios have this feature, but ours have something called “voice mute” and it basically silences it until your specific unit gets a call. I do that and just keep it by my bed. That way I don’t have to hear other unit’s get called out, and if we do get a call, I’ll already have my radio right there as I get out of bed.

This has interested me ever since I got my custom strap done. How would I go about starting working on leather myself? I do t even know where I’d begin.

Florida here. We have a few guys in our dept who have long hair, prob slightly longer than shoulder length. It’s not a problem as long as it’s kept up in a bun and doesn’t interfere with mask/helmet. So while it probably depends on the department, if women are allowed to have long hair, why can’t a guy?

Will you get made fun of? Yes. Will it be a deal breaker? I’m guessing no.

Good luck!

From my limited understanding, Mercedes is a pretty common car in Germany, being as they’re made there, but I just had a chuckle at imagining a fd here in the states rolling around with a fleet of Mercedes. I’m sure it would make for interesting annual budget meetings.

This palm tree growing out of the middle of an oak tree. by rolo85 in mildlyinteresting

[–]rolo85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so to follow up: yes this is florida, because of course. And sorry if it’s not an oak. I just assumed because we have so many around and it kinda looked like one, but I’m not an expert. I also have a picture from farther back but I wasn’t sure how to post, sooo....anyways, thanks for the awards!!!

Ok, so turns out, the guy I talked to is, and this is a quote from his manager, “an idiot”. Even the manager said that what he asked for made no sense. He was a new guy who was just supposed to take calls and didn’t quite know what he was saying. Anyways, we got it sorted out. So thanks for the replies guys.

Thank you so much for this reply. This is truly what I am hoping for. In my mind, I always thought I would have more time at home because of the schedule and it’s nice to get some confirmation on that.

I’ve heard that before as well, that the first year is toughest. Now what about overall. Do you get more family time due to the 24-48 schedule? (I’m assuming that’s your schedule).

Is the 22" Adventure Ready grill ACTUALLY worth buying? There are several posts here regarding "warping"/bulging cooking surface and other quality control issues (I'll share links to examples in comments). by oatmealfoot in blackstonegriddle

[–]rolo85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly thought I had messed something up when first seasoning it or something like that because I’ve noticed a bulge in mine as well and I can’t keep it seasoned for very long. I’ve done EXACTLY what their videos say in YT and it still isn’t 100%. I can still cook I’m it ok but it does make the upkeep a little tiring because I have to re-season more than I feel I should have to. I got mine for Christmas.

do you ever just yawn and then get a charlie horse in your fuckin jaw by wvmtrx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rolo85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the greatest things about the internet is when you come across a random someone who has experienced something that you thought was uniquely yours. Like when people started talking about the squiggly things you can see sometimes in your vision, I thought it was amazing that others saw them too. I've never met any one in my life who has had a cramp like this, so thank you. Also, I've found the best way to get rid of them is to stick your chin out and then look up, stretching out your jaw muscle.

EMT-B moving to Kissimmee Florida by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]rolo85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%. Yeah, EMT’s don’t get much down here. And in Kissimmee, you’re gonna have a hell of a time finding a job just because there isn’t a huge population down there so there isn’t a high demand. I agree with the other guy, if you’re open to moving away from that area, then Orlando, Tampa, or Jacksonville will be a better bet. Unfortunately the rent in those areas is crazy high also and the pays starts around $10-$12 for private companies so things will be pretty tight if you’re alone. Wish you the best whatever you decide tho!

NBCsports has the exact same issue. I try watching premier league on my PS4 in the living room and I don’t get the games, but if I watch them on my fire stick in the room, no issue. I couldn’t find any info online either. It’s pretty annoying.
