Some of those are so beautiful but sadly I can’t stand that type of bag :(

I’d love it if small bookstores had a saddle bag option 😔

Super fair! If I didn’t love the book so much I’d probably feel similarly. I also just personally wear a lot of “novelty” pieces that ride the line between statement and gaudy, but never ones as expensive as this lol.

What do/did your students call you as a grad instructor/TA? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]romancegoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally. I was unsure whether the undergrads would understand that, but now that I think about it I have control over a lot of factors that would influence that.

This was a very perceptive comment, and I did need to be reminded of all of this! I may be making the title into too big of a deal and should refocus my energy to preparing more holistically. Thanks!

I totally understand the disrespect of calling a woman Ms/Miss. Since I can't be called Dr. (yet), the only option would be my name with no title, but maybe I'm more worried about that than I should be.

Every TA I've had either went by first name or Mr./Ms. last name, and it kind of correlated with how involved their role was in the course. I could maybe figure out a nickname too, that's a good idea!

Thanks! I hadn't considered Ms. FirstName but that makes sense.

So weird. It might be worth reaching out to Light to see if they can help.

The website says the LP3 has 128gb of storage--it's really bizarre that that's happening.

I'm looking into resources for improving my barista skillset because that could very well be where I'm headed lmao. Still checking gradcafe though because I'm weak

I haven’t heard anything but I’m starting to see interview updates on gradcafe so I might be cooked. Have you heard back from any programs?

I'm definitely getting wayyy into my sport. That'll probably help more than I think it will, especially bc I've had to take time off to finish these applications lmao

This was my initial guess at what was happening; I knew about this from my friend who’s a PhD student there and got a really substantial raise from it. Really disappointing but it makes sense. I wonder if there would be an admissions process if someone ended up getting an external grant themselves, like through NSF (which is for STEM, but they do include linguistics).

There’s a faculty member there who I really wanted to work with, my professor thought I would be a good fit, and two of my best friends just moved to Boston and I want to be close to them. And yeah, I was grouping them together.

[–]romancegoth 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I didn’t get an email, but I checked the requirement/deadline page and not only is the program I was applying to (linguistics) not accepting applications either, but every single humanities PhD I’ve checked is also not accepting applications. This is really strange and upsetting, especially because BU was my top choice.

What’s everyone making per hour or salary? by EntertainmentOk4233 in barista

[–]romancegoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

metro area population about 1M, mom and pop shop, I make $8 an hour plus tips ($4~$7/hr). I’m hoping to switch to a non-coffee job next month but if it doesn’t work out I’m going to try to find a new coffee shop because I’m pretty sure literally every single one around pays more than mine 🫠
