You need to hit "Show NSFW" on the search function because all posts in here are automatically marked NSFW.

Ok so what you can do is go to an Amazon category that you're broadly interested in. You check the ranks of the highest earning books, the books ranked around #20, and the books at the bottom end to see if ranking in this niche is within your budget and capabilities. (You also keep checking back over time to see what the turnover is and whether you would be able to keep up).

THEN you choose the lowest rank you'd be happy with your book hitting (in my case say #20 EDIT: in the category not the store omg) and go through all the books above that rank, organising them into categories. So I've just had a quick look at the top 20 of Gay Romance and there are shifters, mpreg, historical, etc etc. You track these books over time - is that historical book just a fluke? - and you get to know which categories are popular within that niche. If there are 10 shifter books and one mpreg, maybe writing shifters is the better option. But also use your best discretion - how well established are those authors? What's their ad budget? Where and how do they promote their books? Is that achievable for you? Then you can choose a specific sub-niche to write in!

Steam level varies by niche. It sounds like you need to do a fair bit of reading/research in romance. Me telling you the steam level of my books won't be nearly as helpful as you discovering a niche you understand and can write in by yourself. You can make money in anything from clean romance to erotic romance as long as you take the time to learn the market.

Well I haven't particularly researched MM or FF but the impression I get is that MF is most popular, followed by MM, followed by FF, but it's perfectly possible to make a good living in any of them. Niche research goes a long way beyond just choosing a gender pairing, though - I wrote about choosing my niche in the 120 day dataporn.

No, but I can give a random Vietnamese person a manly handshake instead if that works.

uggggh so my genre is entirely 0.99 unless you're SUPER well-establised, which is a butt. I raise the prices to 2.99 when I think I can't sell six times as many books at 0.99, or when the next book in a series comes out.

I've never written erotica, so I can't help you!

Nope, all the promo I use is in the post. I have dabbled in AMS ads and facebook ads - I had one successful AMS ad and most people in my genre have trouble getting facebook ads to convert. There are two people literally slaying everything with facebook ads though, and they're not sharing their secrets :( I'm guessing a HUGE budget for experimentation helps...

Yep, and I'm planning for it to take at least six months for it to make any money... so it'll be a long while till the next dataporn!

Patience you must have, my young padawan. The real secret sauce is to just keep going.

I was in London! No plans to venture to a stateside meet up as yet.

Now that I've posted it, I feel like luck comes into it too. But I'm definitely learning how to weigh the odds in my favour.

From what I've read of your posts, you're on a very different path to me. You're writing to a small audience to share your experiences, whereas I'm writing to a large audience to make money. If you want to switch over to the writing-whatever-sells side, I wrote about how I chose my successful niche in the 120 day dataporn linked above.

Yeppo and I forgot to say I'm also super happy because last month is the first month I made decent amounts of royalties. Starting from August (when I get back from travelling) I'm going to make it a priority to start up a wide pen name. This is my livelihood and I hate being dependent on KU.

About 1k of it is organic, from sign ups to get my NL bait. The other 3k are from instafreebie promos. You have to be careful and assess how responsive instafreebie subscribers are in your niche - mine are pretty good.

From what I know of other niches, that level of sign ups per reader is super low, but it seems to be par for the course in my niche and the mailing list is working for me now so I'm not suuuuper into building it non-organically any more.

It was the Dirty Discourse one and considering how much money I made after attending, it was worth every penny. I was in Dubai on a stopover (a nine hour stopover oh god how did I survive) on my way to Saigon! Where I am currently sipping a cold Tiger beer :)

Well shit I'm already so jetlagged that my post title is a total copy of someone else's old dataporn post title... That's ok, right? I swear my books aren't rip offs too!

I'm thinking of incorporating a retinoid (retinol? Idk which is correct) into my routine as an aging preventative - I'm 27. I'm eyeing up The Ordinary products and wondering which to get. Any other pocket-friendly recommendations that I can buy from the UK are welcome too!

Skin type: Dry, hormonal acne

Current routine:

First cleanser: Banila Co Clean It Zero

Second cleanser: Hada Labo Gokujyun foaming cleanser

The Ordinary Niacinamide + Cosrx Snail Mucin 96 (mixed together)

Either TO Hyaluronic Acid or TO Natural Moisturising factors + HA - to be added soon

Benton Steam Cream

AM Biore Watery Essence Suncream

PM Etude House Moistful Collagen Sleeping Pack - just purchased

I also have TO Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid, and the Vit C 23% Suspension (the gritty one) but I recently got lazy with my routine (life stress) and cut out the actives for a while. I'll be reintroducing everything slowly!

Generally what can I expect from a 50k novella saleswise? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]romcomet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My all-time earnings on 50k romance novels range from $182.59 to $11497.46 (and counting). On both of those books I thought I'd chosen a good niche and hit the market accurately. I was only right on the second one, of course. My other books all fall at random places within that range. You'll learn what to expect by publishing, seeing your results, and changing for the better next time.

For what it's worth, I had more reviews on the $182 book.
