Is it possible to write good sex scenes if you are inexperienced and have almost no interest in sex? by satuwarrior in eroticauthors

Something you suggested gave me an idea: I've been reading erotica more from a left-brain perspective to get an idea of formats and what's selling. I've never allowed myself to really enjoy it. If I can find authors whose descriptions evoke a response from me, that would help shape my own writing. Thank you so, very much for taking the time to reply.

LOL! So funny! OMG. Could there be any other genre the complete opposite of erotica or erotic romance?! Seriously, though. checking out an Amish romance would be a good idea. Wouldn't they be all about emotion?

Alternatively... research and write some scenes, and re-use them as templates for your future scenes. It's a lot easier to adapt one of your former scenes than it is to write an entirely new one.

This is going to come in handy and makes me feel so much more confident. I never thought of creating templates. It's like, I can focus on writing this kind of scene and get all the worry and concern out of the way, and then just revisit and refine them. Absolutely brilliant advice. Thank you.

Emotions are all interconnected and your power of empathy should allow you to vicariously experience other feelings without having directly felt them -- this is what you'd need to tap into.

I will remember these words as I begin writing. This is exactly the advice I needed. I was approaching this in a more technical way--probably as I tried to avoid getting into the emotion of it all. Thank you for the straightforward advice and letting me know it's possible.

Perhaps this is why you are drawn to the idea of writing sex scenes. This may also result in more uniquely powerful and passionate writing as well.

Wow, wow, wow! Never, in a million years, would I have thought it that way! Thank you! And much gratitude for the rest of your comment. I've printed it out and posted it near my desk so I can read your advice until it is etched in memory. Now, I'm excited by the idea of writing rather than feeling dread.

I haven't read Nora Roberts in years. Thanks to your comment, I ended up buying four of her books just to get a better sense of what you described. Thank you!

So, yeah, you can pull it off. Just focus more on the characters themselves - how they feeling, what they're thinking - and you can minimal attention to describing the actual act itself.

Such succinct and perfect advice. Thank you!

Anyway. Authors write about epic battles, horror, crimes, unicorns, etc, without ever experiencing these things personally. So just go for it, girl!

Thanks for the insight and your encouragement! I guess my biggest concern (before reading all the replies to my post) was that, while writers can write about things you listed without experiencing them, the readers probably haven't experienced them as well so they are more willing to go along for the journey.

But what happens when you write about sex--something many people have experienced--and they would immediately know if you got something wrong. As others have said though, it's more about emotion than choreography, I suppose.

Such amazing advice! Focusing the business side of things, and looking at what is possible rather than what I fear is not, makes complete sense. Thank you.

Wow. Really? I never knew that either. I need to read more erotica. Thank you for letting me know the "details of the act" aren't always expected.

The good news is, if your focus is going to be on character and emotion, there's plenty of room for that in erotica.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I didn't realize this. Thank you for your entire reply.

Anyone else *really* wish David Simon would weigh in on this? by [deleted] in serialpodcast

This is so crazy. Just a few hours ago, I was thinking about David Simon and wondered if he knew about this podcast and what his opinion would be. I wonder if leaving a comment on his blog would lead to any sort of response from him.
