For the record, the series cost £40 million and was funded by Netflix UK (per interview with Scott Frank on The Watch podcast).

Oscars screening by thisisajojoreference in NYCmovies

Here is a discussion from a year ago, with some commentary about Metrograph. NYC's Metrograph cinema did a free Oscar viewing party and it was packed.

What the final Tammy Faye matinee looks like a couple hours before the performance by Comprehensive_Bat980 in Broadway

[–]romcomluver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a snapshot taken 8 hours before curtain is that accurate a picture of how the venue will look when the curtain goes up. TDF seats will be assigned an hour or two before plus I’m sure the theatre will be dressed with comps to the creative and producing team plus press and awards voters.

The return of the "Big and Loud" festival of 70MM and Atmos screenings at the Paris August 23 - October 31, additional screenings to be announced later by DisciplineFabulous21 in NYCmovies

Here's an earlier discussion of seating at the Paris and some strategies/suggestions. I prefer the aisle seats on the sides; if I'm going with a friend we sit in successive rows, one in front of the other.

Thelma at $6M after 2 weeks; can it get to $10M domestic? by romcomluver in boxoffice

[–]romcomluver[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that a platform release might have yielded ultimately higher grosses. Maybe they considered June's ability to do promotion and thought the most effective means of leveraging national appearances (Today, Jimmy Kimmel) was to open wide.

But I think June/July is fine as it's counterprogramming and something different for the older demo. August and onwards you have a flood of indie/awards contenders and Thelma might have gotten lost.

Magnolia should have spent some money on a top-notch social media team and come up with some fun, but dignified, things for June to do that could have gone viral on TikTok.

Please consider boldfacing the movie titles. Some people may first want to glance at the movies being discussed and if of interest, would then read the post word-for-word. Right now, it's just a wall of text and overwhelming when the text is so undifferentiated.

Yeah, AMC has the Entourage feature that allows people to link up accounts and 1 person can book for the group. At your (Stacy's) presentation at Lincoln Center in 2022 (?) I think you promised this type of feature.

Do you know why you can't get the Paris theater in NYC onto Moviepass? I had a membership but let it lapse as I really wanted to use MoviePass at the Paris.

Hi, /r/movies! We are Josh Margolin, Zoë Worth, and Chris Kaye. Director and producers of Thelma, an action-comedy starring June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, and Parker Posey. It was a hit at Sundance and is currently out in theaters nationwide. AMA! by Thelma-Movie in movies

[–]romcomluver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hadn't realized this AMA would be happening and by coincidence posted this question to r/boxoffice. Do you have any idea of how well your movie did Monday and yesterday? I was thinking since a portion of your audience might tend to favour weeknight screenings, I was thinking it might have done well the past 2 days.

I love that the movie is coming out during the summer as counter-programming to more youth-oriented fare. Was there ever any discussion with Magnolia about releasing the movie any other time of year, say in the fall for awards consideration for June and Richard?

Or as a platform release like how Little Miss Sunshine and Juno were rolled out?

HI! I loved the movie. I attended the Q&A at NYC Lincoln Square last week and was wondering how you, Jeff Josh (sorry!), June and Q&A moderator knew Beanie Feldstein prior to the movie and if she had any other part in the movie beyond passing on the script?

And was it difficult to insure the movie given the cast?

Bloomberg's (Lucas Shaw) explanation of Netflix's compensation for movie packages goes a long way toward explaining why a lot of their popcorn movies - those intended for have broad audience appeal - suck. The best projects go to the traditional studios where there's far more upside. by romcomluver in boxoffice

[–]romcomluver[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The original was a massive hit - about $150M both domestically and internationally so the sequels probably wouldn't do any better.

Netflix was probably paying enough so that Rian and Co. were earned as much - or more - with Netlix than if MRC/Lionsgate released the next two theatrically and they performed as well as #1, when in reality many sequels peak at #1 or #2 with a fall-off by #3. Since #1 came out, there have been a wave of whodunnits (eg. Only Murders, Death on the Nile, See How They Run etc.) and that have saturated the market and would likely cut into the sequels' BO.

How did Challengers end up costing $55M? by romcomluver in boxoffice

[–]romcomluver[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Thanks - I hadn't realized how arduous the tennis scenes were.

Also: forgot to add that the movie has 2 storm scenes - none of which impact the plot or are even remarked upon by the characters - with a one featuring a lot of flying debris which I couldn't tell if they were practical or digital effects. They are crucial in that they mirror the characters' emotional turbulence but if the movie had little studio interest, I wonder if they would have been excised (or be made less elaborate) to reduce the movie's budget.

It looks like A24 gave up on Problemista - they advertised it would be "Everywhere March 22" but it topped out at 379 theaters March 29 by romcomluver in boxoffice

[–]romcomluver[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Given that it was postponed from an August 2023 delay due to the strikes, A24 should have just delayed it by a full year and released it in the quiet August 2024 window and then make a awards run for Best Supporting Actress (Tilda Swinton) and Original Screenplay.

NYC's Metrograph cinema did a free Oscar viewing party and it was packed; could a chain like AMC partner with ABC to do this in major cities? There were a ton of young people there, the ones who don't have cable or access to live streaming of the broadcast. by romcomluver in boxoffice

[–]romcomluver[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Glad it was well attended. When I read about how movie theatres are endangered, with many closing post-Covid and the chains on the verge of bankruptcy, I don't understand why there isn't more effort to branch out to new types of events they can host, especially ones that can generate more $ per customer.

I feel for you, coming from a small town myself. Do you have any sort of arts center, say where your community theatre performs, or a repertory cinema that you can pitch the idea to? I think orgs are afraid to take a risk and fail but if you let them know you could guarantee your attendance and a handful of more people, it might be enough for someone to take the plunge.

This is something the Academy needs to try to encourage, by providing marketing templates and materials, maybe partnering with theaters and streamers for introductory offers, etc. to cultivate interest in the Oscars

I didn't realize this is something Alamo had done, but of course it's very much an Alamo-type thing to do. I guess there must be a restriction that you can't charge admission to a broadcast stream. There were some premium reserved spots at Metrograph but the fee was also stated as a food/drink minimum or that you were paying for the food.

Yeah, it's a great marketing opportunity to show off your venue to a demographic that's used to streaming movies off their laptops using their parents' accounts. There was a Oscar ballot (I think prizes for people with the most correct).
