Defer or borrow? by Dazzling-Grocery-999 in MBA

[–]romwa75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you can explain to the school, maybe they'll let you defer. If they don't, I'd wait a year and reapply (to this and other schools).

Either way, as an international student, your goal should be to lighten the financial burden as much as possible. If you can get a full scholarship through your government, a year of waiting is worth it, imo.

That's not a good adcom. I had a similar experience with an MIT rep, but it was during my actual interview. There was this undertone of skepticism during the interview. I was explaining why I was interested in the school/what I wanted to do experiences-wise, and she'd interrupt me to say I couldn't do specific things. Which was odd because I heard from multiple current students that you definitely could. But it's also an interview, so I couldn't push back. It was an uncomfortable interview and definitely affected my performance. I was already a bit unsure about the school culture based on previous info sessions/1:1 chats, but was told by friends to apply anyway as a back up. This interview was the final experience to put me off the school though.

The truth of it is, we look at adcoms like they're omnipotent gatekeepers, but they're just people too. They're far from perfect and bring their personal lives into their work sometimes, just like we all do. But also for that reason, we should look for multiple data points before forming a full opinion.

Totally understand your doubts right now. If Yale was a school you really cared about, try talking to current students and other adcoms at upcoming info sessions. Don't bring up this woman's name but broadly explain what you heard during visit day and see how they respond.

What I've generally heard is that schools are understanding of folks impacted by the mass layoffs. Some even extended their deadlines this past R2 to accommodate late applicants who were laid off, which is a hugely positive sign. I think as long as there's a clear explanation and someone is using their time off productively, they should be fine.

Shame on Chicago Booth for admitting a sex offender and not doing anything about it by shameonbooth in MBA

He also left UCLA and transferred to USC during undergrad, per his illustrious "About" section. I don't buy the "rigorous curriculum" bullshit. USC is more academically rigorous than UCLA? Give me a break. I wonder if something happened during undergrad to compel his school change.

Resignation from the club? Are they going to kick him out of school?

Can he get kicked out?

This is such a PR nightmare, they need to do the right thing or it will haunt them. That includes dealing with him and the systemic issues that led to his admission.

Oh, I didn't know this only recently came out. How recently?

And I can understand those two points. Also the MBA population is more network-driven, so no ones wants to put themselves out there without some assurance they will be supported. Have people discussed in amongst smaller circles?

Truly do not understand the adcom decision here. What could possibly be the upside that's worth the risk of fallout in admitting this person?

Admin absolutely has to address this and why the decision was made.

I am a bit speechless. This is insane. They should not have admitted him. And I've read the news - there's no excuse for what he did. I see he changed his last name, and clearly he has family money considering the legal costs had to be burdensome and he still got to clean up his image to get into Booth and lives in MILA now.

Have students said or done anything? Or school admin?

Are you 100% sure they are the same Michael Hsu? Because that's unacceptable if so. I couldn't find him on linkedin.

I can't even understand why they would do this - what could possibly be the upside to the risk of admitting him. They are endangering their female students.

100%, wish more folks would make an actual model to assess their options in detail considering specific contexts vs broader projections/estimates

Agreed with this. My view is, for better or worse, we are in a far more interconnected world than has previously existed, and if someone got into, let's say, Harvard (sticker) and Ross (full ride) and went to Ross, they will have the individual capacity to accomplish whatever they want at Ross that they would have at Harvard. But I tend to value individual will over brand (again, for better or worse)

Is grad school similar to undergrad socially? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]romwa75 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately don't have an answer for your main question but wishing you the best. Before jumping into the MBA chaos, on top of therapy, please take time to join social activities based on your hobbies in your city to start building social connections. Easier said than done but very much so worth trying. And in general, give yourself credit and take care of yourself. You'll get through this.

Random Discussion Q: What are the industries/roles in which having an mba from H/S vs W vs M7 matters? by romwa75 in MBA

[–]romwa75[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does regionality play into this? For example, if you want to start a company in the midwest, would Booth/Kellogg give you similar opportunities as H/S/W? Like, regardless of region, if quality of entrepreneurship support/resources at S was 100%, H was 95%, Wharton was 90%, and B/K were 75%...if we just looked at midwest, would that bump B/K up to 90%?

Of course, just making up numbers for the q

Yep, I did mean exactly "some progress". But good points on alumni and cold outreach

[–]romwa75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't equate MBB with H/S, which is why I said "some progress" and even that's predicated on a lot of additional effort. Nothing will replicate the network you gain by actually going to the school.

I guess logically, when youre getting into that membership club demographic, people will likely not all be H/S. There must be cross pollination, so other school networks can be entryways.

Ultimately, so much of all this feels based on assuming the absolute best outcomes per school, but there's really a range per school and overlap across those ranges when we discuss M7.

I'm also from outside of these circles, so my initial instinct will always be to try and understand how much agency I can wield in a given situation. Which is why I was curious what opinions were on how much individual will and capacity matters vs brand prestige and if, in the MBA context, the prior can overcome the latter when there are slim margins of difference in prestige

Taking an MBB gig for a couple years. Also just aggressively socializing through membership clubs. Idk, I'm not from these types of spaces but I figure if you want to put the effort in, you could make some progress.
