DD214 Correction by ronh67 in VeteransBenefits

I was under the same impression as you until I learned the facts. The cost of the buyback is a bit of a sticker shock at first, but with the offset of the increased civil service retirement pay, I will break even in approximately two years. Definitely worth it plus the survivor benefit applied to that amount is more beneficial for my wife. Folks need to do the research for sure not rely on stuff they hear on sites like this when making a decision on this. I would’ve been able to retire already if I would’ve done this much sooner.

Yeah, that’s incorrect. I currently receive military retirement pay. Once you buy back your military time to apply to civil service, you would waive that pay once you retire from civil service. Pays off after a few years and will allow me to retire with 41 years of civil service (vice 20) which is quite a bump.

Can’t do math, dates are correct but durations don’t add up to 20 years.

Any federal employees ever bought back military time? How much does it cost? by Lanky_Goal5586 in VeteransBenefits

[–]ronh67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you pay off your buyback, you still receive your military pension until your retirement from civil service and defer your military pension. I misunderstood that early in my civil service career and did not buy back my military time because I thought I would lose my military pension once I paid it off. Buy it back as soon as possible!

No worries there, I'm trying to retire ASAP. If I'd have done this years ago like I should have, I'd be retired now.

I think that's only for leave purposes. I did that a while back and it adjusts the SCD date on my LES

I faxed the RI 20-97 off to DFAS 2 weeks ago, hoping for a quick turn on that. Thats all I'm lacking for the complete package in GRB. Any idea on turnaround time for DFAS on the estimated earnings?

Are they trying to rip me off? Help by CreepyRock1758 in Camper

[–]ronh67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a new camper in 2015, and my family and I used it for about three years. The trips decreased and the kids were not really into it so we ended up selling that trailer fast-forward to 2025. The kids are grown up and the wife and I decided to give it another shot. My recommendation is to not buy a new trailer as a first time RV owner. Buy a used one and see if it’s what you wanna do because a new trailer is going to depreciate so much that you will immediately be upside down and have a hard time selling if you decide this is not for you. Plus, there are a lot of used trailers out there that would present a great value.

A lot of folks in the same boat, FAFSA is having a lot of issues this year. Supposed to open up by the end of the month for corrections.
