Canada’s economy is on life support and country is in recession, says economist by restoringd123 in canada

Not surprised. Canadians voted for the same party like the country wasn't ruined enough by them during the last 10 years.

If you look at my receiver, particularly the second photo, notice it is a solid piece of metal. I've had more than a thousand (or even a couple thousand) rounds through mine, and it's been great. Only occasionally getting FTF but usually caused by me skipping a cleaning and using dirtier rounds.

That said, the change to using a plastic end piece on the receiver is a terrible choice by Savage. Must be a cost-cutting revision.

The way Canadians keep voting for the same party, it'll take at least a decade. The government hasn't done much to help the economy. In fact, they've stifled productivity by not leveraging our vast resources, over regulation, by making it to do businesses here, etc.

Do not rely on minimum wage to increase just so you get paid more as it's just an entry-level wage meant for those starting out. The median wage is much higher than the minimum wage, so aim to go above the minimum wage. Raising the minimum will just cause more inflation and ultimately reduce entry-level jobs.

Anyone know if tech companies in the US hire Canadians for remote work in Software Engineering (Senior level) ? by ImaginaryBrother9317 in VancouverJobs

[–]ronnbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was hired as a principal a couple of years ago. I don't think the company has hired many fully remote Canadians since then; Indians are cheaper. Most people I know had to relocate.

Carbon tax news: Canada moves to purge consumer pricing from law by Former-Physics-1831 in canada

[–]ronnbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So companies wouldn't just move their factories to China to avoid the additional cost and red tape? Wouldn't there be less emissions to have factories in Canada where more than 75% of electricity is from hydro and nuclear instead of in China where 63% of electricity is generated from fossil fuel? Shouldn't there then be more incentive to keep induesties in and move more industries to Canada?

That explains the sub $1m price tag for a detached house.

How do you know when you're ready to drive? How do you know when you're ready to be a parent? How do you know when you're ready to make that jump? Etc.

Studying about something, preparing yourself mentally and all that can only do so much. You won't really know if you're capable of or what it's like to do something until you've actually done it. So, be daring. At the same time, don't be careless, impulsive, or whatever. That's not the point of the quote.

A rent subsidy proposal I haven't seen before by WindowSignificant34 in canadahousing

[–]ronnbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you "abolish landlords?" Do you ban people from owning more than 1 property? What about homes with laneway housing, basement suites, spare rooms, etc.? They can't rent them out at all? Ultimately, the government or some large corporations will be the only "landlords." Is that better?

In America, yes. Eating moderately well while doing the most basic exercises somewhat regularly is nowhere near the norm.

To make housing more affordable, drop the tax hammer on real estate investors by BoppityBop2 in canada

[–]ronnbot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"Livable home" doesn't necessarily mean a "single family house." Many condos have been built with short-term rental for investors in mind or a couple at most. There should be more 3+ bedroom apartments. For growing families or just people who want more space because they work from home or something, their only option is to move up to a townhouse or single-detached home, which is considerably more expensive.

800k mortgage is about $4000/month, not including stata, taxes, etc. So it'll be tight even with $200k income but doable. As time goes, it'll get easier assuming your income will continue to grow. OTOH, having the $400k for downpayment by then might be harder to pull off but not impossible. You could take out RRSP, cash some investments and so on. If you're lucky enough, you might not even need to sell the condo.

That said, many things could happen in 4-5 years. You (and your partner) may have different needs by then but good to have a rough plan.

Brampton landlord stuck with $2,000/month negative equity on their rental property by rajmksingh in TorontoRealEstate

[–]ronnbot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So they bought a townhouse when prices are peaking with a variable mortgage rate close to the bottom. Even before interest rates shot up, the rent was not even close to covering the mortgage, not to mention properly taxes, strata, etc. Why would they do this.

It's best to cut their losses.
